Question about Creative Labs Zen Touch MP3 Player

At wit's end with Zen Touch

My computer recognizes it as "Creative Zen Touch." But instead of a 20 GB MP3 player, it's recognized as a 20 MB mass storage device. Tried updating the firmware...update stated that I already had 2.11.01. I have run all the tools in recovery mode (in which the player is stuck). I have reset the player. I have tried uninstalling the Univ. Ser. Bus controllers. The MP3 Recovery Tool from Creative doesn't recognize the device when the computer does.

You seem to have the most extensive knowledge base regarding the issues surrounding the Zen Touch. Any insight/help you could provide would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks for your time in advance.

PS - I have two computers one with Vista Premium/WMP 11, and one with XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2 and WMP 11. I tried uninstalling WMP 11 and it won't allow the uninstall saying the folder for the uninstall has been deleted (not something I ever did). It works on neither.

Well this is a common problem when the player is dropped or banged just a little bit. Format it and reinstall firmware.

Okay. Also if you goto add/remove programs and select WMP11... this should be all you need to do, if it gives you the option then downgrade to version 10. Goto programfiles and delete the creative folder.

this is after of course removing the driver and disconnecting it.

reboot and plug it in and put firmware onit

Creative Zen says Docked. I cannot turn it off and the computer no longer recognizes it.

There maybe a software error with the programming of the player. Make sure it is not equiped with a hold button because that will also keep it from responding to the buttons. If the battery comes loose take it our and reconnect it to the computer and see if it recognize it. If it does recognize the player try to update the software.

Player not recognized by any OS...

Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard

Firmware problem

See the solution for PC not recognizing your player. You should downgrade to WMP10 by uninstalling WMP11 and WMP11 runtime. Uninstall portable device drivers from System menu and restart the computer. Replug the USB and the player should now be recognized.

Middle of a firmware updated bricked my Zen TOuch

This solution is from another post, and it was how I recovered from the same problem. "I had the same problem and the solution is documented on the Creative labs message boards. This happens if you upgrade the firmware with a computer that has media player 11, Which KILLS your Zentouch. (Thanks Creative!!) The solution, as partially noted by the other poster, is to rollback Media Player to version 10 AND to eliminate all traces of Creative software on your PC. Reboot, then plug in the Zen, it will be regognized by MP10, and then run the firmware upgrade software. I found it easier to do this by using a different computer rather than uninstalling software from mine. After this WMP 11 does work."
