Question about Garmin GPSMAP 498
Unit has been working fine until today. Started with depth readout not changing. i.e.; when moving from one depth to another readout would stay the same. After turning unit off and then back on, depth would read OK.
Then it stopped reading altogether - just 0.0 all the time. Everything else appears normal. Display appears OK, temperature reads OK - just no depth reading.

I did update to the 4.8, and worked for about 10 minutes, and then went back to the old routine of booting over and over, and will not except map. I think I might sent it back to garmin in a few days after I get to tired with it.

Disable the WAAS on your unit. A new satellite was launched earlier this year and is causing a problem. This is why Garmin issued a new software update version 3.9.
Menu > Setup > System... scroll down to WAAS and disable it. This should get your unit working again but with less accuracy.
Update the software to version 3.9 and leave for about 20 minutes in open area (clear view of sky) so your unit can download the full almanac. This should permanently fix your problem. Once you finish upgrading, go back and enable the WAAS.
to mhotz: You can purchase serial2USB connectors at a computer store. You will have to install the drivers which come with it before it will work. That should solve your upgrade problem.

Try holding the power slide to the left and holding it there for 8 seconds. If that doesn't work, try charging it via your PC & USB cable. If that doesn't work, try a mains charger if you have one (I had to do this with mine). Good luck!

Please do this and let me know results.
If your device is not providing navigational prompts the language settings on the device will need to be checked:
If this section has your desired voice please make sure this voice is selected which will resolve the issue.
If the above fails or the unit doesn’t list the voice/s that you require you will need to update the software and reload the voice/s back to the device via WebUpdater. To install WebUpdater please click the link below:
Once installed and the software is updated please make sure that you check for additional updates which should provide you with a number of voices to reinstall to your device.
Once reinstalled your problem should be resolved.

Recalibration has nothing to do with repairing this problem. If the touchscreen is non-responsive, how are you going to recalibrate it when it doesn't recognize the key presses?
The problem is caused by a defective touchscreen. SHARP substitued a different touchscreen into the 6xx series that fails even when the glass isn't damaged. The problem is caused by a defect in the manufacturing process where the touchscreen connections becomes detached from the tail that plugs into the board.
The touchscreen connections between the screen and the tail are made from conductive ink that can fracture, most likely caused when pressing on the screen over time.
These defective screens can be identified by a white tail cap at the end of the tail, whereas the original touchscreens have a maroon tail cap. The original touchscreens will only fail if the glass has been broken.
I only use the original touchscreens for all of my repairs.
