Ok. I guess I will have to do it this way:

You space between words by selecting the "_ "

The space is created by selecting key in the selection screen of built-in characters.

    1. Press the key to return to the previous page

How do I programme the 440 to put a space between words I want to embroider?

There is an underscore in the alphabet that is actually a space. Instead of stitching a character, it stitches an underscored space.

What is the largest size of lettering and how do we space between words

The built-in character size is usually restricted to the same width as the widest zig-zag your machine will make--most machines are 5mm or 9mm.

Spaces are usually made by programming some straight stitches between words (begins around page 73 of the manual).

Spacing between words

I have the Model 600. In the characters, there is one that looks like an "underline". Actually, it allows a space between words and does not make an underline mark. Some of the embroidery machines use that character to allow a space between words instead of having a "space" character.

I can't find out how to put a space between words or names when embroidering on the Brother PE 700II. I am also not able to find out how to do this in any of the instruction manuals.

I am not totally sure but I do not think you can leave a space. If you are doing two or more words and want to leave a space then you would have to completely finsh sewing at the end of each word(cut the thread) and start the next word seperate. To continue sewing straight through the thread will remain attached and will form a stitch. Sounds strange but if you think about it, it is logical, with the machine threaded and sewing, every needle stroke WILL form a stitch. Other thing you could do is at the end of every word select an "underscore" and stitch this to whatever gap you need between words then start your new word. Once you have finished unpick the "underscore.
Sounds a bit complicated and time consuming but as I said I have never been asked this before and it is a guess at a solution.
Best of luck
