Question about Creative Labs ZEN Vision:M Digital Media Player

1 Answer

Common to the other problems listed, BUT with a twist of lime...

Like many before me apparently, my Zen stopped working.. (actually, its a customers)
First out, I let it stay connected to the usb, since its dead already before it comes to my hands, and that little bugger needs power poor guy..

Does takes me a few times, plug in, disconnect, plug in, curses, disconnect, tries reset, plug in etc.. but suddenly upon all the cursing, the "ZEN" shows up, and gives me exactly that.. zen! ^^
But, the zen I felt, was soon to be fading. The zen is charging, blinking with its tiny lightning icon. :) But windows finds a device, tries to install it, and, when "successful", says it may not work properly until the system has been restarted. Alternative, its just continuesly connects and disconnects.
Every tenth second, the *pop* sound of an usb-device beeing plugged in, is played and a balloon pop-up says: "New hardware connected" where a "MTP-device" si the new hardware..
I belive the MTP is some kind of usb-"controller" or something?

Till now, it has not resulted in other than those two errors, which doesn't seems to have happened to anyone else! :s ?

Any replies would be greatly appreciated! ^^

Ok. I've now taken the big jump here, and tried "reload firmware" (I hoped that wouldn't be an option :/ ), which lets the zen go to "docked"-mode, but windows does not recognize it. Just found a soulution here, something about reinstalling the usb-controllers, since it may be "fixed", moving the zen to another computer. I'll try that, and come back to you :)

(ps. the zen actually was found when I plugged it into another computer.. just needs its drivers thou :)

    Strike that!

Just tried to insert the zen yet again, and there it is! Found its way to "My computer" as a portable device.. At least thats a start.

But the empty 30 gb zen, now shows only 50 mb (!!) available- and capacity- space, and the firmware update still wont recognize it.. Now would be a great time to pop up a few bright ones.. anyone?

Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard.

My zen photo sleek is stuck in recovery mode

I had this same problem and almost threw out the Zen. You need to download the Zen Sleek Photo firmware upgrade software from Creative (http://ccftp.creative.com/manualdn/Drivers/PDE/9475/0xD499781C/ZenSleekPhotoP4S_16_1_10_01.exe).

  1. The firmware updater needs to run in XP SP2 or SP3. It apparently won't run on Vista.
  2. The trick to getting the Zen recognized by the firmware update software is to make sure you uninstall both WMP11 as well as the WMP11 Runtime. Those two things are listed separately in Add/Remove programs. BOTH must be uninstalled before the firmware updater will recognize your Zen.
Now I'm back to using my Zen. It's all good.
