You need to remove the agitator and parts around it. Remove the spanner nut, grearcase and turn the cam driver counterclockwise and pull to remove the brake and drive tube from the tub support. The motor coupling, which is attached to the drive motor, is located off to the side of the brake and drive tube. Hopefully this helps.

Whirlpool extra large capacity washer. Does not agitate or spin. I hear the motor running trying to spin/agitate. I checked the motor coupling as I had to replace that a couple years ago and figured it...

I would replace the clutch and the bakes on the machine. It could be that the bakes did not release and then the clutch is going to burn up, and in that case the brakes are bad anyways so replace both of them.

My Roper extra large capacity washer is not agitating or spinning but drains. Can you help me figure out the problem?

The draining is the clue.a3f3851.jpg The pump mounts on the motor. The motor is a double shaft type that drives a pump on one side and the transmission on the other.0d81fb3.jpg Between the motor and transmission is a coupling. These couplings break from time to time from a low water heavy load, a rug or comforter usually finishes off a coupling that was already on it's way out.0249487.jpg If it was the lidswitch the pump would not work. I believe it is the coupling. When replacing this part take care not to jam it up against the transmission or motor and cause binding.

I have a two speed automatic whirlpool washing machine

It sounds like your motor coupling has broken. Normally the older the machine gets, the more wear and tear on the coupling. Order the coupling as per the model and gain access to the main motor. remove both clips holding motor then pull off broken pieces then install new kit.(easy to see how). Reinstall motor and retry. Done.

Washer won't agitate or spin. inglis il42000 can here motor running but no spin or agitating

You have a broken motor/trans coupling . Have to remove the case (not the back panel !) , pump , motor , and lastly , the coupling .Hammer new coupling on both motor and trans (hammer easily ) and reasemble .

Cannot get new motor coupling installed

You will have to remove the motor to get access.
Easiest way is to start by removing the cabinet. With the cabinet off you will have access to the motor mounting clips which will allow you to remove the motor and install the new motor coupling.

Let me know if you need a walk through.
Good luck!

Does not spin

there is a coupling between the motor and gearbox, that fails.
it is a simple repair, and well worth trying

remove cabinet
  • pop off edge trims from control console
  • remove screwss from under edge trim
  • slide console forward and up ~1inch
  • flip the console over the back of the washer, the hinges are plastic and a little fragile
  • remove brass clips holding cabint inplace remember how they fit
  • lift cabinet ~1inch and remove forward
repair coupling
  • motor gearboxpump is at front bottom center
  • remove lock screw from clip holding pump to motor
  • remove two spring clips
  • pull pump off motor and swing sideways on hoses, tie off to left with a string
  • remove lock screw from clip holding motor to gearbox
  • remove two spring clips
  • pull motor off rubber coupling
  • pull nylon spider off gearbox shaft
  • pull nylon spider off motor shaft
  • install new spiders to shafts. Use a hammer to strike a wooden dowel on the center of the spider, dont hit the legs of the spider they break off

Note the new coupling spiders have metal centers to stop further breakage, common fault
  • turn gearbox spider 1 leg up two legs down
turn motor spider , 2 leg up 1 leg down so the spiders will interlock
  • install new rubber coupling on gearbox spider, install motor on coupling.
reassemble all clips and screws in reverse order
reassemble case in reverse order
on reassemble ensure plastic level sensing hose is not dislodged from water level switch body

takes longer to type than to do the repair
at parts store "Kenmore gearbox coupling" will get the correct part

How do you get to the motor coupling?

once you have removed casing, removr two clips that hold pump on and hold pump to one side then two more clips hold the motor on remove them and the motor will come off (undo the motor plug and two wires to motor cap).then you have access to the drive coupling.
