Sub-Zero model 211

The freezer on my old sub-zero, model 211 is not freezing but the fridge is working fine.  There is a fan in the freezer bottom that does not seem to be going on, even when I close the freezer door.  Should I try taking the fan apart?  What does that fan do?  I'd appreciate any help at all.  Thanks so very much!!!

Thanks so much.    I tried to check for ice by opening the fan area in the freezer and noticed that the evaporator coils behind the fan are not cold, what does that mean?  Is it time to send my baby to a landfill?

    Thanks again

It does kick on sometimes and the freezer gets cold enough to start freezing things again and then after awhile when I look in, everything is melted again. I see now that the bottom fan does work, but it does not always go on when the door is closed.  It is a mystery to me.

Thank you again for your help!!!

First of all, the freezer temperature is the MAIN part of the unit. Either look for a new thermostat for your model unit and try switching it out, or look for a new fan motor for the freezer. The concept of the refrigerator is just like an A/C unit. It is designed to remove heat from one spot and andcarry it to a discharge place of NO imporatnce. I would definately start with the thermostat in the top of your refrigerator since it is likely the least expensive solution. Research your particular model number for proper fan replacement if it comes down to it. Also, check to insure that the freezer isn't frozen up behind the back wall. Let me know if there is anything else I can help with or if you need more assistance on the same issue.

Is the compressor kicking on? Listen for it to kick on and if there is no activity for it, there could be 2 other problems to deal with. On the side of the compressor there is a capacitor, or a "HARD START" that occasionally goes out and is realively esay to replace. Also, there could just be the simple fact of the compressor being shot, if that is the case, it's more than likely cheaper to replace the whole refrigeator than to have a reapirman come to replace and recharge the compressor.

Look into a defrost timer and have your system serviced to check for refrigerant. The compressor is good, then the HIGH repair cost should be over. Also, take a shop-vac with a brush attachment an vacuum out the whole system under the cabinet and off of the coils. Anything else, please don't hesitate to ask.

You might have a dirty condenser or possibly a freon leak. Check to see if the fans are running and lights are going off when the doors are closed. You didn't mention what the model number is, that might help.

We have our Sub Zero model 650 frig set to 35 degrees, our usual temp, but suddenly it won't get lower than 50. Freezer seems fine.

Check for a fan motor in between the freezer and the fridge. Or you have a block of frost in there shutting off air flow.

Look on your sub zero for more model numbers. I have found some information indicating that the refrigerator thermostat may be the problem but need those numbers to confirm. Thanks, Sea Breeze

Sub-Zero 550 - freezer unit is chilling, but not freezing

Ice maker was intermittent at best - ice was often just a shell. After two failures to correct we had the ice maker (a Whirlpool - on a Sub Zero - Go figure) replaced. Then the paddle that detects the ice level broke. Next step a new GE.

Sub zero freezer too warm

I believe the freezer has to get down to 7 degrees or lower for icemaker to harvest. Clean your condenser and blow it out. If that doe not fix it you will need service for sealed system
