If you lock the orientation, your screen will not turn when you turn your phone. If its unlocked, the screen will turn when you turn your phone. Some apps will not allow the orientation to change no matter how you have it set.

Double press Home, swipe to the right, them press the orientation lock button. Once it's unlocked, it will change orientation when you rotate the phone.

Preliminary instructions:

If it keeps running, but doesn't gain any ground, and you don't have significant leaks, it's either piston rings or (probably) valves. If you're up to it, pull the head off (mark the valve plate orientation with a sharpie marker, first). Look for broken or fouled valve reeds or discs (depending on design).

After posting here on the 8th of March, I did convince myself that it has to be a hardware problem. As the phone is out of warranty, I got a technical guide of the net and began to disassemble the phone. My feeling was that the lead connecting the two parts of the phone or the lead to the screen had a bad connection, due to dust entering the phone. Long story short, I opened both connectors, cleaned and reassembled the phone. To my surprise, the phone booted up and worked.
The problem only resurfaced twice since then, when using the Qwery. It has improved a lot and I believe that dust is the culprit. Hope this helps. Thomas
