Yes, you can capture camcorder video from a miniDV camcorder using a FireWire cable and video capture software. Your computer came pre-installed with Windows Movie Maker, or iMovie (if you are on a Mac).

FireWire, IEEE 1394 and iLink are all the same thing. There are 4 and 6 pin FireWire cords. My guess is that you need a 4pin to connect to your camcorder and a 6 pin to connect to your computer. But it all depends on what ports you have available.

You can get a FireWire cord for less than $10 at most computer electronics stores

Check if you have a Firewire port that is either a 6pin or 4 pin port that looks like

Use a firewire IEEE 1394 cable kit and appropriate software too transfer to PC. Most firewire to usb cable will not work.
You will need a
1. Firewire cable
2. Firewire port on PC/Laptop as well.
3. Recent OS that supports firewire.
4. Appropriate image/video editing software.

This Camcorder does not support USB streaming with the Windows 7 Operating System. Use an i.LINK cable to transfer the video to the Computer. The i.LINK port is also called IEEE 1394 or Firewire port. You can use any video capturing software like Windows Movie Maker to transfer the video from the Camcorder to the Computer. The Firewire to USB cable won't work with your camcorder, you will always end up with this error.

I need to free download from a digital video camera (sony dcr trv265e) to a laptop. i have lost all drivers and softwares. i manage to find the usb driver but i cannot transfer the video to my laptop.Is...

This type of camera downloads video to computer with a Firewire (Sony call this i.Link) connection. Some mini-DV and D8 cameras have a USB connection which is used for stills ONLY.

You don't say what OS your laptop runs. Most PCs have a USB port, but no Firewire port. Macs often have a Firewire port but may not have USB.

There is a Sony tutorial page for downloading video to computer at THIS LINK You will need to select the operating system, then Digital8 as the camera type, then select the type of connection. As you will see, the USB option warns that it won't work with many cameras, and you are strongly recommended to use i.Link (which everyone else calls Firewire).

Hi im trying to transfer 8mm tapes to my computer?i have down loaded new software but when i hook up computer says it cant locate i,link cable?i have hooked up provided usb cable but it wont reconize it?

This type of camera usually downloads better with a Firewire (Sony call this i.Link) connection. Some mini-DV and D8 cameras only use the USB connection (if they have one) for stills and can ONLY download video by Firewire. This is because you have to play the tape into the computer, not just copy a file. The DCR-TRV265E definately has to use Firewire.

Most PCs have a USB port, but no Firewire port. Macs often have a Firewire port but may not have USB. As most Windows PCs do not come with this interface, you might need to fit an add-on Firewire interface card. This will come with a driver for the card.

Suitable Firewire (DV) cables can easily be found on Amazon or eBay. You will need the kind with a small (four pin) connector at one end and a larger (six pin) connector at the other. My camera came with the correct lead.

Please tell me from where i can download DCR-TRV285E driver of sony digital 8 .

If you mean a driver to transfer the video to your computer via firewire (ieee1394), then you are in luck! No driver is needed. As long as you have a correctly installed firewire port on your computer, a firewire connecting cable, and video editing software, you should be able to easily transfer video to your system.
Connect the camera to the computer via the firewire cable.
Turn on the camera.
Put the camera in playback mode.
Startup Windows Movie Maker or iMovie if on a Mac or whatever video program you prefer.
Should be an option for "capture" or "import from camera".
Use that and you are good to go!

You don't say what type of connection you are trying to use. This type of camera usually downloads better with a Firewire (DV) connection. Some mini-DV cameras only use the USB connection (if they have one) for stills and can only download video by Firewire. This is because you have to play the tape into the computer, not just copy a file. The way it works on my computer, the camera is controlled by the computer software through the Firewire cable. Confusingly, Sony call Firewire "i.Link".

As most Windows PCs do not come with this interface, you might need to fit an add-on Firewire interface card. This will come with a driver for the card. If you have a MAC, you may already have a port.

Unable to transfer video information onto PC ACER ASPIRE using windows Vista for editing by windows movie maker. Interface on PC is via USB. If software driver for firewire or 1394 interface is available...

If you want to use the USB cable to connect the Camcorder to the Computer to transfer the video to the Computer then:

(Applicable for Vista Operating System Only.)

This Camcorder does not support USB streaming with the VISTA Operating System. Use an i.LINK cable to transfer the video to the Computer. The i.LINK port is also called IEEE 1394 or Firewire port. (An i.LINK is a black D shaped connector with 4 or 6 pins. The type of cable to be used will depend on the i.LINK port of your Computer. The Sony Camcorder will have the 4 pin i.LINK cable and if the computer has the 6 pin i.LINK port, then you may have to use the 4 pin to 6 pin i.LINK Cable).

You can use any video capturing software like Windows Movie Maker to transfer the video from the Camcorder to the Computer.

Refer this Link for the instruction to transfer the video to the Computer using i.LINK cable.

http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/documentLink.do?externalId=C111893

NOTE: As the Camcorder does not support USB streaming with Vista, it is not required to use any Sony Device Driver to transfer the video to the Computer. You do not require any Drivers or Software from Sony to transfer the video from the Camcorder to the Computer using the i.LINK/Firewire interface.

Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does the firewire require a special input on the computer?

The PC does need a Firewire interface and yours may not have it... since you don't see it. I didn't have one either so I hopped on eBay and searched for a firewire card. Found one, ordered it, installed it and now I have a firewire interface the camera can plug into.
