Noise can come from these areas:
The inside of the freezer Self-defrosting refrigerators use a circulating fan to move the air through the freezer and refrigerator compartments. This fan runs whenever the unit is cooling. The fan is located in the freezer, as follows: If the freezer is on top, the fan is on the back wall, near the top or bottom, in the center of the freezer. If the freezer is on the bottom, the fan is on the back wall, near the top of the freezer. If the freezer is on the left, the fan is on the back wall, halfway up or near the top. Over time, the fan may become noisy--usually making a chirping or squealing sound, though it may make a loud groaning noise instead. To find out if the fan is causing the noise, just open the freezer door and push in any fan/light switches. If the noise is louder when the door is open, the evaporator fan motor is the cause. You can't lubricate or repair this motor. You must replace it.

The outside back of the refrigerator There are three components on the outside back of the refrigerator that may become noisy: the compressor, the condenser fan motor (if self-defrosting), or the defrost timer (if self-defrosting). The compressor is a football-sized case with no apparent moving parts. You can see it on the outside of the refrigerator at the back near the bottom. It is usually black and has black or copper-colored tubes and various colored wires attached to it. If the compressor is the device making noise, there is probably no repair that will reduce the noise. You will have to replace it--which can be quite costly. If the condenser fan is making noise, there may be a build-up of lint or other debris on the fan blade. The fan is located near the back of the machine, sometimes behind a thin panel. To clean it, first unplug the refrigerator, remove the thin panel, and use a soft bristle brush to clean it. If there is no lint build-up or debris on the blade, you will have to replace the motor. The defrost timer is often located at the bottom of the refrigerator, near the front and behind the kick plate. Occasionally the electric motor inside the timer may become noisy. The timer must be replaced to solve this problem.

The bottom of the refrigerator Noises detected at the bottom of the refrigerator almost always originate from the back of the refrigerator. However, sometimes the drain pan under the refrigerator will rattle. You may need to tape the pan in place to stop a rattle. Also see the “Outside back of the refrigerator.”

We have a e381t model refridgerator/freezer. there is a rattle/scraping noises coming from the fan in the freezer part. There is ice behind the protective sheet that separate the fan from the main area. Is...

If there is noise of the fan rubbing with the frost build up on the freezer then it is confirmed that the defrost timer is faulty. Now shut off the fridge and leave it powered off while you clean and check the evaporator for frost.
Earlier make sure that the thermostat was set to normal mode for freezer and fridge. However if ice forms in the freezer then observe the fridge for about 24 hours for cooling to continue and the fridge to cut off . If not the auto defrost timer, or the thermostat must be checked. Frost formation without defrosting could block the air flow and so shut the air passage to the fridge. Also the blower fan must work and if this is not working then the fan can be faulty. Also a fault on the control unit is a suspect to non functioning of any one of these components.
If defrost timer works but frost keeps forming check while the compressor shuts if the heaters are working, check continuity of the heaters.
So try this test using a multi-meter on the defrost timer and the thermostat and make your observations so that we come to the solution.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

Frist off the un-plug routine for 3 days can be accomplished with a fan blowing into the freezer compartment for just over 2 hours. (I.e. a manual defrost) Why they told you 3 days... vs using a fan is absurd.

Now for your defrosting problem. Lets try to manually initiate a NORMAL defrost cycle that should take 45 mins or less to complete.
Using this link:

locate item 6. (Adaptive Defrost timer)... It will be in the overhead of the fresh food compartment. (Your probably going to need some one with some mechanical skills) Gain access to the defrost timer. (Yes you have to take things apart) To put this board into defrost, short "L1" and "Test" with a small screwdriver and wait three to 8 seconds. You should hear a clicking noise from the relay and the uint will shut off except for the lights and go through a defrost cycle. This cycle should terminate in 45 minutes or less. If it does terminate there is either a problem with the defrost themostat or the defrost element. You should hear some hissing after about 10 minutes as the evaporated ice turns to water and drips onto the glass tube of the defrost heating element.
No hiss or heat from the heating element = failed element or defreost thermostat.

If the defrost cycle never terminates.... the defrost thermostat is bad. You should be able to terminate the defrost cycle yourself after an hour by simply unplugging the unit for about 10 minutes.

If it does not even cycle into defrost after a few attempts of shorting J1 and Test the adaptive defrost control has most likely failed.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

The freezer is frosted up and the refridgerator is not getting cold. I have vacuumed out the coils.

The newest defrost feature in modern fridges is the electronic adaptive defrost control board. To put this adaptive defrost style of fridge into defrost, short with a small screwdriver between L1 and test on the adaptive defrost board, wait 3 seconds and you should hear a "click" noise from the relay and the fridge will shut off and go through a defrost cycle

More than likely either your defrost timer is bad or the heating element in the fzr is bad. The timer is normally located with the controls in the fridge side behind the plastic back or top if there is a light in the top center. It will have an access where you can turn it manually with a flatblade screwdriver. Turn it slowly and you will hear clicks it may take a few min. but try to make it click one at a time and listen for the fan and compressor to kick off. (slowly the defrost mode is just one click) If it kicks off wait 3 min and open the fzr and see if you hear hissing or ice cracking. (the hissing will be water dripping onto the heating element) If this happens replace the defrost timer. If you do not hear the element hissing ect... The element is bad or the defrost limit attached to one end of it it will be a round disc apx the size of a nickel replace it. good luck and remember to unplug the refridgerator before delving into the elect parts. I hope this helps you can defrost the fzr manually with a hair dryer or if the manual turning of the timer works until you get the offending part. good luck
