Not getting reception...

When I first bought my Magellan 700 three years ago upon moving to LA I had perfect reception. Then after a while i got used to the roads here and quit using it. Now my wife and I are taking trips to other places and would like to use it again, but we can't get any reception. The unit powers up fine, and will even occasionally get reception for a min. or so, but then that annoying satellite pic. appears again and reception is lost. Anything we can do to remedy this prob? Thanks

I have the same problem and my unit is only two years old. When I called customer service they said it could not be fixed and offered to sell me another unit. Why would I buy another one from them?

I too can't get the unit to stay in touch with the satellite. Box stays in the black and it gives text directions. It finds my location but can't nativate me to any destination. Magellen will not repair it and says they no longer have parts. The offered me a trade in for the Maestro 4250 for $400. I'm not happy with that at all because I bought this on credit from Radio Shack for $900 and still paying for it with a balance of $300. What can I do now?

I bought this over priced unit some time ago for my girlfriend and she had the same problems with the GPS satellite reception. It was so unreliable and problematic in all locations (Los Angeles, Chicago, etc.) that she stopped using it. I recently purchased a much less expensive Garmin C550 unit for a friend and it has worked perfectly since the beginning. If the company doesn't fix this issue with the Roadmate 700 I'll never buy another product from them -- I will also make sure that none of my relatives or friends buy anything from them either!!!

Does not pick up satellite location right away - have to drive around forever before it picks up your location

its a pretty old unit the 700 series came out 6 or 7 years ago.

an external antenna is available on ebay for about $25.

The factory antenna pulls off and teh plug is beneath it.

Personally I would recommend getting a new unit Garmin, magellan and Tomtom all make units under $150 and the improvements are vast especially in user interface but most importantly newer maps and faster processors make it a worthwhile investment.

No Satilite Signal

it is a dicontinued like mine roadmate700 and started losing sattilite signal like everyone says here ,i got upset i spent alot of money on it,then this happens, so i decided and bought the new magellan mastreo 4000 and just updated the software and no problems i love it,portable, thin light weight internal chargable battery that lasts 3hrs,the signal strenght is awsome, never had any problems,my advice junk it, the 700 like i did and purchase a new unit.this way it will save you alot of problems and headaches in the future, beleive me.

Power

It may be the cradle is damaged. If any of those tongs are bent it could lose connection meaning your must now spend $70 to buy a new one which will also eventually malfunction. They've jacked up the price from $30 when I bought a new one to $70 in just a couple of years knowing it was a bad product and they keep breaking. I have a looooow opinion of Magellan at this point.

Won't turn on

One of the wires in your power cord could be broken. If you have the a/c adapter, see if you can power up with that. If you know someone else with a working Magellan, you could borrow his cord to test your unit.

If not, check the car adapter with a continuity tester. Put one tester probe on one of the side springs of the car plug and the other probe on the outside metal of the GPS plug. If that shows continuity, place one tester probe on the end tip of the car plug and the other inside the the GPS plug.

If either of those do not show continuity, first take apart the auto side of the cord. Check the fuse and the wire to contact solder joints. If they seem okay, carefully cut back the molded plastic from the GPS end and examine the wire to solder joints. If any are broken, replace the cord or resolder the joints.

Magellan Roadmate 700 freezes up

Try resetting user data. At user menu, press "-" zoom out and repeat button at same time. select reset user data, it will reboot automatically, then check to see if it is any better. If not, hopefully the software came with your unit and you can re-install it. Good luck and let me know if you need help with the installation. Daniel
