Portable Hard drive problem.

My computer (plus any other pc) has stopped recognizing my 160 gb western digital "passport" portable hard drive.... usually, you just plug it in the USB port, and it shows up as another drive.

Western Digital Hard Drive not detected by my computer

More information may be needed, however...

I'm guessing you have a SATA Western Digital Hard Drive. You will have to install the SATA drivers before it will recognize it.

If that's not the issue, please let me know what kind of hard drive you have and what computer you are installing it into.

Running out of space on my Emachine T1120, How can I add more memory for 10 GB music files that I have?

I would buy an external drive. You can get a external hard drive as your expanded storage area that connects to your computer via a USB cable. The plus side is its portable so you can take it anywhere with you and when you get a new computer you just plug it in and go.

I have plugged the USB lead into the pc processor for a recently purchased 160 GB portable hard drive but I don't know where to access it to save files to it. When I look in 'my computer' it isn't there. ...

Yaa, it should be in my computer.
  • Check out your portable HDD manual, How to use?
  • Check out if there is any power switch on your portable HDD. Some of external HDD have a switch.
  • If there is any one it must be in on position to use.

If any problem, Just Ask me...
Thanks
Iqbal

My computer has stopped recognizing the 160 GB portable hard drive (plug and pray)

better plug it to another pc and observe if it would be recognized by the pc. well, sometimes, portable hard drives takes time to be detected by PC specially when it comes to age, better observe it for about 3-5 mins, and if its not detected, try to touch the usb cord of your portable hard drive connecting to your pc and make some adjustments to it.
