How do I (on my MAC) format my kingston data traveler 512mb?

when you send items to the trash in finder. it places a trash extension on the files and saves them so to remove the items permanently you must empty the trash you can empty it while the disk is attached but be aware that when you empty the trash it will remove all .trashes including those on the hard disk so make sure to check the trash can for files you may need ahead of time also if this does not correct the problem you can connect the disk and open /applications/utilities/'disk utility.app' select the disk on the left then choose the erase tab at the top of the box I am not really familiar with these jump drives (I don't use them) but I would imagine you can use any format although for the disk to show up on mac and windows computers you must format to a ms-dos(fat) file system

I can't make format, partions or install windows.

Hi shlmughni,

If you're trying to format this drive, and you have nothing on it you want, then I would suggest that you use a windows 98 boot disk HERE. And first thing you need to do is load dos by putting the floppy disk in your drive A: after you create it from that site of course. Then allow dos to boot up. I'd opt for the allow cd rom option when it asks. After you get a dos prompt A: type in fdisk. Go to the display partions section and see what your drive is partioned as? Once you find that out, I'd delete the partion from the main menu choice delete partion. After that create a new partion from the main menu. Creating a new Dos partion will allow you to choose the size of the partion you want, then after that it will create your new Dos partion. When that's done, exit fdisk, and go to the A: prompt and type in format c: This will format the drive all over again, and give you a clean fresh starting point in which you install your OS.

Good Luck

I`m unable to install windows 98 in seagate 80 gb ide barracuda hdd

For W98, if you create the bootdisk from within windows, you will need to go here to download the newest version of FDISK.EXE then copy it to the bootdisk, allowing it to overwrite the older version. This way you will have support for larger harddrives.

FDISK LIMITATION WITH 64GB DRIVES:
Why does FDISK not recognize my disk (or RAID array) which is larger than 64GB?

There is a bug in Microsoft's FDISK under Windows 95B, 98 and 98SE that can be corrected by downloading a newer version. See Knowledge Base Article Q263044 for more information.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q263044

When you use Fdisk.exe to partition a hard disk that is larger than 64 GB (64 gigabytes, or 68,719,476,736 bytes) in size, Fdisk does not report the correct size of the hard disk.

The size that Fdisk reports is the full size of the hard disk minus 64 GB. For example, if the physical drive is 70.3 GB (75,484,122,112 bytes) in size, Fdisk reports the drive as being 6.3 GB (6,764,579,840 bytes) in size.

NOTE: This hotfix is not designed for 48-bit logical block addressing (LBA) hard disks, and it is not supported on hard disks larger than 137 GB. However, even if the drive is physically larger than 137 GB, if you create partitions smaller than 137 GB, this FDISK.EXE version will work correctly. (THE FORMAT COMMAND WILL SHOW THE DRIVE AMOUNT IN DOS TO BE OFF THE MARK, BUT WILL BE CORRECT WHEN YOU GET INTO WINDOWS ITSELF)

Direct English Version download:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/Win98/Update/8266R/W98/EN-US/263044USA8.EXE

This package installs the updated Fdisk.exe to the Windows\Command and Windows\Options\Cabs folders, on a computer running Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition. If you are starting a computer from a Windows 98 Startup Disk in order to partition and format the hard disk, you should copy the updated Fdisk.exe from the Windows\Command folder to the Startup Disk, replacing the original Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition version of Fdisk.exe on the Startup Disk.

Barracuda hard disk 80gb

More than likely, since you say you did a DOS install of the OS, you did not set the FDISK parameters to set your primary drive. Insert the DOS CD you used to format the system. Boot to a DOS prompt and run the FDISK command. It should have an option, I believe it is number 2 or 3 to "Set primary drive". Select your hard disk 0 as this drive and you should be fine at rhat point.

Total size is not 80 GB IDE Hard Drive

Hi,

Two possible solutions but both calls for another software/utility.
1. Use FDISK but you should be booting and running in DOS mode;
2. the other is Partition Magic which runs under Windows environment.

The idea is to delete the existing partition (that shows only 31.50Gb) and thereafter re-partition to the full capacity of the drive. of course doing so would erase the contents. Further, a format after the re-partition is required.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Hard drive problem

hmm...could be a problem with the drive. How are you formatting it? Is it in DOS mode or are your formatting it under Windows? If it's in DOS mode and it's encountering that problem, there's a possiblity that it could be damaged. Don't loose hope, try to run FDISK command on the hard drive. Delete the partitions on it and create a new one. After running FDISK on it, format it again and check if the same problem occurs. If it still occurs, there's a problem on the hard drive.

After clearing CMOS and it still doesn't work, try to run FDISK on the drive. Delete partitions and create a new one. There could be a hidden partition which could be using the other hard drive space. Restart PC and then format again. This should allow you to use the full hard drive capacity.
