    How do I do this?

  • Chevelyn Mar 14, 2008

I tried it, but it still doesnt print out. It moves while typing, but the thing that hits against the inktape doesn't move. Please, help me. If I can't fix it, I'm gonna end up dumping it. but I really don't want to.

I had this problem once with another brand. One mode actually waits for you to complete an entire line of type before printing it onto the page allowing you to make error corrections without wasting alot of "correction tape". Change the mode back to typing on the fly.

If you're in Line-by-Line mode (what I referred to), press ALT + OPERATE to select the AUTO mode. This should return you to normal typing.

You also won't get characters to print if you're CENTERING text, or RIGHT JUSTIFYING text.

while the daisy wheel is moving, do you hear any clicking like a striker hitting the wheel? If yes, verify you have a daisy wheel on the type writer, check to see that it is installed properly, reinstall if necessary.

When the head is moving, you should also see the daisy wheel turning like crazy.

If you don't hear any clicking from the striker, it's possible the solenoid is malfunctioning. Unless the wiring is visible, it's going to be hard to trace. I don't know how old the unit is, but considering the power and ease of a computer, you might want to consider scrapping it.

I had the same problem and after going through all possible steps, I took out both the printing ribbon and the correction ribbon, turned the unit off and while turning it back on, held down the ALT + Q [reset] then inserted the cartridges again. Not sure if I got lucky but it worked.

Smith corona SL480 instruction manual. I just need a manual so I know how to use the features built into the typewriter

How to Use a Smith Corona Typewriter A Smith Corona typewriter can be either a manual or electric model. Whichever model you have, the typewriter works in basically the same way. If you are familiar with a computer keyboard, you can type on a typewriter as the keys are laid out exactly the same. Unlike a computer, typing mistakes are harder to correct and, unless you use carbon paper, you will only have one copy of any document you type.

When I type straight letters I get symbols and numbers an example I typed the phrase "Hi How are you?" w w-2 v/j a-qI appeared on my paper I have no idea how to clear this and return it to normal script

There is a switch on the keyboard that must have gotten moved..for symbols..or the printwheel is in wrong. Take the pw out and reseat it. it should spin when it is snapped back in. you may have to close the cover for it to go to it's Home position.

THE CHARACTERS TYPED DOES NOT MATCH WHEN APPEARS ON THE PAPER ?

What model typewriter do you have? Most have a setting key on the keyboard, usually on the left side to change keyboard or printwheel settings.

Types wrong letters

It sounds like you have the 10,12,15,PS selector switch on PS with a 10, or 12 print wheel installed. Return to the left margin, move the switch to 10 and type.

Typing different letters than what i am striking

Your are on the wrong keyboard setting. Look around the typewriter, usually on the left side of the keyboard, and you will see a setting 1,2 or 3. Keyboard one is the one you want.

Types wrong characters

If the typewriter is typing letters or symbols that you do not type, it is usually because the Pitch Selector is set to "PS". The pitch selector is on the left hand side and has the numbers 10,12, 15 and PS. Place the selector on 10 or 12 and you will be OK.
Also, check to make sure your printwheel is installed properly. Remove it and put it back in to make sure.

Another thing you can try is to clear the memory. To do this, turn off the machine. Place a piece of paper in the machine sideways. Hold down the MAR REL key and while holding it down, turn on the machine. Wait 2 seconds, then let go of the key. The typewriter will start typing. Shut the machine off after about 15 seconds. Then turn it on as usual. This will clear the typewriter's memory and unexpected charaters should not happen anymore.
