Sometimes the usb ports are not set to auto connect so you have to find them manually.. if you goto start then to my computer you will see all your ports and find the one that you are trying to use then right click on it and make sure the settings are set to run a disk once it's inserted..
you can also goto start then run, if using xp, and browse for that usb port that way too.. let me know if this helps at all, if not, i can try something else.. you can do a repair on your ports too but let's see if this helps.. good luck..d
