External Monitor connection issue

I saw your post answering a question regarding monitor use with the Toshiba Satellite A105-S4004 Laptop & I have a question I cannot find a direct answer to - would you mind helping me? I am trying to connect an external monitor (ViewSonic) that I just bought to my toshiba laptop & am not clear if I did it correctly b/c the screen on ext monitor is on, but obviously not connected right to the Toshiba. I bought it from staples & got a discount b/c it was the display & they didnt have the box or instructions but it's turned out to be a problem :-/ Can you either tell me how to connect it/troubleshoot, or direct me to where I could find that info? thanks SOOO much!

There is only one way to connect an external monitor to a laptop. Most laptops have an "FN" key. by simultaniously pessing the "FN"key and F7 key it toggles from laptop to external to both each time you press the keys.

Hi,
This is a common problem with inverter cables working loose at the hinge end but could be a problem with the inverter itself or just loose hinges.
Downloading new drivers won't resolve the problem.
Either way the case has to be split to check certain components so opening it up will void what warranty you have left.
I recommend the you take advantage of the warranty and send it in for Toshiba to repair as when the laptop comes back it will be OEM repaired and should work great for a good while.

Regards.

Display Problem

Try connecting an external monitor if this also shows a "bad" picture then probably the graphics chip on the laptop is faulty.

Have you tried connecting to an external monitor? Try that. If the picture is perfect on the external monitor then the VGA port is OK but there is a problem with communications between the system board and the screen connector.

Hope this helps. Kindly leave a rating.

Thanks :)

When you turn it on, do you hear any activity? Motors start working, fan spinning, etc…? Try to connect an external monitor and start the laptop. Check if you can get any video on the external monitor. If the external monitor is dead too, try to remove the battery and start the laptop from the AC adapter. It also might be a bad memory module or a bad connection between the memory and the motherboard. Try to reseat the memory module, move it to the second slot. If you have two memory modules, try to remove them one by one and turn on the laptop. Also, try to remove the hard drive and see if you can boot it to Toshiba screen without the hard drive installed.

There is no special button to reseat the BIOS settings. To do it, you’ll have to access the BIOS using F2 button on the laptop start up, but as you have no video, you cannot access the BIOS and set it to defaults.

Sounds like GPU failure. unfortunately its nigh on impossible to replace without replacing the whole board which can be expensive. I saw a few on ebay for around £120.
