Thanks VERY much for your diagnosis ... I would appreciate an additional response to my service query, just for comparision ... Another aspect of this problem: After the disc just shuts down, the red On/Off light blinks repeatedly and the OPEN button must be pushed many times before the disc drawer opens ?? Help !

This is highly unlikely but still there is a chance that the mechanism operateing the reader lens is unable to move after a certainpoint inside the drive and therefore always stops the playback at 15minutes.

You could open the device clean the pickup, but dont touch the lens. you can try pushing the lens to both ends carefully or by spining the metal bar witch is connected to the lens motor. That would move the lens to both ends.

I do not recommend that unless you are handy with electronics and you are prepaired to possibly avoid warranty. proceed at your own risk.

And then Il quote the gury Ginko

"If it is under guarantee contact Denon for terms. If not bring it to a local service shop and have power unit tested."

Some DVD players have an Auto Power Off feature. If this feature is activated, the RS-232C commands on some models will be ignored as the player is in an auto mode. To gain RS-232C command control, simply turn this function off.

I will exclude dirty lens, because in this case it usually does not read the disk at all. If it turns itself off completely (shut down) always after 15 minutes then is most probably an overheating problem, usually it is the power adapter in need to be changed.

If it is under guarantee contact Denon for terms. If not bring it to a local service shop and have power unit tested.

regards

Maybe all you need is to dust off the DVD player's pickup. I have had this happen several times with several players. After dusting the pickup, those players are still in service.

If this doesn't work then what might be happening is a misread of the disk or a buffer error, these happen often, and can be fixed sometimes by cleaning the lens, cleaning and relubricating the guide rails and making sure the rubber bumper gromets are not worn down. Now these are all of the mechanical things you can do. The problem could also be a bad memory sector in the play back buffer, or a store and hold voltage could be off a bit (indication of a bad capacitor).

How to fix my Denon DBP-4010ud Blu-Ray Player

Appears to be a software problem. Unfortunately, some blu-ray players contain software that expires, requiring you to repurchase newer, more expensive software from the manufacturer in order to continue to play blu-ray discs. Check your software for the player. No freeware blu-ray software out there.

Progressive scan problem

You need to clean your laser lens my friend. If that does not help, I'm afraid then that your laser assembly is going bad and on its last leg. The first clue to this is that you stated that the Cd's work and the DVDs do not work properly. The laser, when it gets weak, starts to mess up on the Dvds first but the Cd's will soon follow. Good Luck

JVC XV-THA5R multi-region DVD player - fault recognising a disc in and playing

I too have this same problem on my current DVD player, AND strangely enough I had the same problem on my previous player.
Previous player was made multi region and was a Sony S660 (I think that was the model number).
My current DVD player is a Denon and was £550! It is also made multi region and has the same problems! I don't get it!

Your DVD player is having a problem reading the disc. This is what is accounting for the pausing and the slow loading times...especially if it plays other movies without hitches. Even if the DVD is cleaned, some scratching on the disc will prevent it from being viewed properly. Blockbuster shoudl give you another disc to try of the same movie if you ask. Also, you can try getting a cleaner for your DVD player to remove dust and help it read discs better.
