what is your umd disk, a game or a video or a movie or something. just check if the disk is corrupt, destroyed, damaged and the like, if this has happened before, try to see if the lens are somewhat touched or damaged.

there might be a problem with your UMD optical reader on your PSP. have u tried all the disks??? none of them work? Try updating to the latest firmware version. If everything fails, then i believe there is something wrong with your disk reader (hardware related). Have u tried playing any media from the duo flash cards??? if the problem is with the UMD reader, then u will have to give it to SONY for repairs. let me know...
check first that you are using version 3.71 which i image you are if you bought in asia ( main menu system information)
regardles of wheter you are on this version or not i'm damm sure is not a sony release of the firmware you bough in asia :-)
shut down PSP hold power button 4 - 10 seconds or until light goes out.
restart PSP holding down R button to access recovery mode.
go to configuration,
check fake regioon currently disabled. and free umd region currently dissabled ( use x button to enter sub menus and toggle possible options)
You should check to see if another UMD will work first. Also try them in another PSP. If your sure your PSP is not reading Discs, then and only then, Clean the Laser lens carefully. Using a strong flashlight and magnifying glass, look into the UMD drive with the UMD door open and look for debris like hair or lint, and also dirt and dust. A black switch pokes up on the left inside the UMD drive. Its a little black stick. When you press down on this Black stick, your UMD disc motor should spin for second or two. The UMD laser lens should light up when your press this switch. If any of this does not happen, you need to replace the UMD drive. If you need someone to do this which if you have never done it, you need some knowledge big time.
I can do this for you if you're in the USA for $55 including a New UMD drive, REturn Shipping, and 90 day warranty. Contact Repairtech@playstationclinic.com
Did yout try using the same UMD game your brother was using and see if the game format has anything to do with it? Since you upgraded, the UMD game may be old, and might not work with Version 3.71. It sounds like your PSP is working just fine other than that.
First of all make sure that the movies you want to transfer are of the Mpeg4 format.
For info on how to convert different files into the correct format follow this link : www.memorystick.com/psp
Choose the movie icon from the main menu, insert a UMD or a Memory Stick Duo, a new icon will show up. Choose the icon and press the X button. The movie should now play.
In order to download the movie into the Memory Stick Duo you have 3 options:
1. use a computer with a Memory Stick slot.
2. use a compatible USB cable.
3. use an external Memory Stick reader with a USB connection.
Note that the PSP cannot read files converted in a rate higher then 768 KBPS.
