I get the same message about the magenta tank. There is only one tank in there! I remove it, put it back, then printing begins. Really annoying.

So does the guy providing the solution think we are idiots???? Thanks for nothing Mr. Obvious. We all know how to install the ink cartridges. I am haivng the same problem and it is very frustrating. I have even tried cleaning the contacts. I find that the porblem does not occur when I shell out another $15 for a new cartidge - makes me think the problem is with the ink cartridges. Any help would be much appreciated.

When installing or replacing an ink tank, only one of the ink tanks should be installed. If the ink tank is not installed correctly, an error message will display.Press on the tab to release the ink tank, then remove it from its slot. If you are replacing multiple ink tanks, make sure to replace one by one.
Give a thorough check up to confirm any colour ink is not twice loaded (cannot be loaded in a single slot, may be in another slot )
May be any defective ink cartridges

I have the PIXMA MP500 & 3 of m ink cartridges #8 blue, magenta & yellow ran out of ink but I have a brand new #8 black & #5 pgbk that I changed. Now I just want to print from the black ink...

Unfortunately, the printer is designed to need all of the ink cartridges in place and no empty ink cartridges. This is designed to protect the ink system from damage.

There is a way to print a color document in black and white but it won't help with your issue. (Enter the Printing Preferences by right clicking on the icon for the Canon MP500 in the Devices and Printers Panel (Win7). (It's Printers for the Vista Classic View and Printers and Faxes for XP) Then put a check mark in the box for Greyscale Printing in the main tab. Then click OK and close the window. There is a similar method for Mac OS versions.)

I wish that I had better news.

I have an MP830 printer and it keeps saying I have more than 1 of the magneta cartridge installed

Are you using recycled cartridges? It sounds like someone stuck the wrong chip on one of your cartridges. I suppose it's annoying, but it shouldn't hurt anything - you'll just have to check out all carts when a "magenta" cart is reported empty.

I have canon pixma mp500. The blue ink won't

This is common in Canon Pixma printers (all models). If you are refilling your cartridges or are buying refurbished cartridges this will happen more often. Take the cartridge out and put it back in. If this does not work, then replace the cartridge altogether. If that doesn't work, you need to contact Canon (us.canon.com if you are in the U.S.) for help. Let me know if this helps you.

Cannot recognize ink cartridge

I had the same problem. I was using original brand cartridges and it was still not working. Here's how I got it to work. I recommend doing each step and then trying to print a test page to see if it is working.

1. I used a Q-tip with Isopropyl Alcohol and cleaned the gold contacts on both the cartridge and the mating contacts in the printer.

2. Then from the Setup Menu, I found a menu called Tools. From there I ran "Align Print Cartridges".

3. From the same menu I also ran "Clean Print Cartridges"

4. I then ran a few test prints by going into the Setup Menu and then choosing "Print Report" and then selecting "Self-Test Report". It prints grid patterns in black & white as well as magenta, yellow and blue. The black grid pattern had some missing lines until I printed this report a few times.

5. I made a few photocopies and now the printouts no longer have large stripes of missing ink as it did in the earlier steps.

Good luck. Hope this helps.

More than one ink tank of the following color is installed

Other forums report this problem as a faulty ink cartridge that cannot be recognized or gets recognized as the wrong color. Calling canon tech support will usually result in a free replacement from Canon. If not, try purchasing a new cart before ditching the printer.

Frequent problems with the magenta cartridge of my PIXMA MP510.

Dirty or faulty contacts in the cartridge chamber is the only logical explanation.
Remove the cart and with a cotton wool bud and a little alcohol or similar[NOT ACTETONE it melts plastic] give a gentle clean.
