SOURCE: smoke coming from back of
You may have overloaded the washer and the belt drive system could not handle that excess mass.. The smoke and burning smell is a belt melting while trying to rotate the drum.. I would unload it .. gain access to the drive mechanism ( probably via an access panel in the back but may not be.. - brand and model specific).. and then check for damage to the drive belt.. You may look at the pulley system and look for burnt black from melted belt on it.. You could also have a clog in your pump that the belt drives but can't ( because of that clog) and therefore the belt rubs over the pump pulley and melts.. Could be any one of those things.. Hope that helps..

SOURCE: change belt.
this is a easy job for a tech but a hard one to regular people have to remove the transmition and thats is by removing a nut in the tub, so better call a tech and pay for it, is not to espensive repair at least in my area...good luck

It could be one of 2 things. 1 the belt. or 2 the main seal and bearing. i recomnd to get a tech just to make suer.

You most likelyhave burned a drive belt. Could be a couple things. If the machine was loaded to the max and a bit more, it is possible that a small article of clothes may have been flung into the outer tub and into the pump... this can freeze it up and the motor will keep trying to turn the belt against a frozen pulley.
You'll need to open the machine and check the pump for blockage and change the belt... let us know if we can help with procedures..
