Sometimes the ports on the rear and on the front are different speeds (older mother boards). Try connecting it to the rear port if you are using the front or vice versa.

Very slow while copying files

Are you connecting it to a "USB 1.1" port, or to a "USB 2.0" port, on your computer?
The latter ports are 7 to 10 times faster!

If your desktop computer does not have any "USB 2.0" ports, you can purchase an add-in PCI card, to add such ports.

My computer doesn't recognize my Acomdata 250 Gb Hard drive (HD). The computer pops a balloon saying that it could run faster with a hi-speed 2.0 port. I own a dell Xps m1210, the installation cd that...

First make sure usb cable connected to harddrive is working fine. try it in different usb ports. Press windows key +R key so you can see run then type in run "devmgmt.msc" then press ok so you can see device manager uninstall all usb drivers then it automatic install usb drivers. then check. Also you need to change registry for that type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11 CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} And remove upper filter and lower filter. Then restart computer then check. Try your harddrive in different computer if it is not recognized on another computer too then your harddrive has internal issue. Also locate the below key and make sure it's value is 3 not 4. HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\usbstor make sure start value is 3 not 4. Let me know if you need further assistance. Thanks for using FixYa

Not recognizing the hard drive, originally my P/C said it was a cable problem. Where can I purchase new connections & ac adapter?

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Or, purchase a new "empty" external storage device (with AC adapter), and "transplant" your current disk-drive into this case.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- you can buy a new W.D. device, through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

I have tried connecting my Iomega 250 gb USB 2 Hard Drive to my computer and it is telling me that the unit has malfunctioned. Is there any way of getting the data off it?

First try connecting this USB drive to a different computer.
If this did not work then the USB adapter case is faulty, then remove the hard drive from the case and attach the hard drive to an USB hard drive adapter then plug it into a working computer's US port. If the hard drive is OK then the computer will see this as an external storage device and you can open the folders and files to backup the data off this hard drive.
If this does not work then there are companies that can recovery data from faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

Maxtor 320 GB mini not working

If it shows up as a USB mass storage device it:-
1. Has power
2. It is connected to the computer via USB.
3.The correct software has been loaded for the hard drive.
The beep sound is probably an error message saying that the drive is not responding properly inside the case.

Hard drives Drives have been known to stick or not start up due to power cables or ribbon cables being dislodged. Try pushing these back into place.

If this is not the problem go to the Maxtor site (maxtor.com) and report the problem with the drive, not the USB which appears to functioning correctly.

I have a model HD320UHE5-72 external acomdata hard drive that when pluged into usb and power turned on is not reconized by computer. Vista It worked fine until yesterday.

I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most USB portable / external hard drives and OTHER devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems (mac/ Linux) similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further

USB flash drives can fail for no apparent reason.
Sandisk Cruzers are especially bad for this.

USB hard drives should be treated with extreme care.
This is a real hard drive ! and knocks and bumps can quite literally kill them.

It is possible to remove drives from the enclosures in most cases and connect directly inside a PC to fully check it.

Note that if you hear a drive clicking or pinging this could be the worst thing you would hear.
Known as "The Click Of Death"

If none of the above steps help look at updating the drivers from the manufacturers web site in the support section.
