I recently bought a new DVD/VCR machine. The VCR is the problem, tapes are jumpy, many lines across the screen and close captions are distorted. EVen just watching TV without tape or DVD, close captions are distorted. This machine doesn't have auto tracker and I can't seem to track it myself.

- Sorry, I'm an electronic illiterate and have no idea. My
son-in-law hooked it up, following instructions that came with the machine.

- Hi It's me agaom, the electronic illetrate, the reason I haven't responded is because I haven't seen my son-in-law yet. However, I have another problem. I can't get the closed captions on the DVDs. I checked the language and found that the DVD subtitles is off and can't get it back on. It will go to French and Spanish, but not English. I think I must have done something wrong. H E L P!

How is the unit connected to your television?
Are you using an RF connector using a short tv cable or a scart lead?

Hi Carrie

Not to worry, son-in-laws are good!

Assuming the machine is working correctly, there is only one reason why the picture will be distorted and that is interference.

Here are a couple of things your son-in-law may be able to check for you.

Firstly, make sure that the DVD/VCR is connected to the television using a scart lead. The DVD/VCR was probably supplied with one. It is a short cable with a large rectangular connector at each end.

If a scart lead is already being used, there may be other units connected to the tv that are causing interference. Try removing all the other units like cable tv, satellite receivers etc and see if the DVD/VCR is any better when it is the only unit connected to the tv. If it is, you will need to use a scart selector box so you can switch each unit connected to the tv separately. (Sorry I know it's getting confusing now!)

If it still isn't any better, ask you son-in-law to check through the menu on the DVD/VCR and look for a setting for Video Format. This should be set to PAL Format unless you are in North America in which case it should be set to NTSC Format.

Hope this helps, please feel free to ask me for more info if you still have problems.

Regards
Helen

- Hi Carrie

I don't know what machine you have there so it's a little difficult for me to advise you how to select closed caption. There are a couple of things you should consider.

Captions can either be open or closed. Open means they are available all the time, Closed means you will only see them if
(1) The DVD includes them
and -
(2) You have activated them.

If you have a DVD marked CC or HOH you should be able to activate the captioning using the manu function.

The DVD that will not allow you to select English subtitles but will allow you to select French and Spanish, may simply not have English subtitles on it.

Try a DVD that you know has CC or HOH written on the sleeve or a DVD that you have used before with subtitles and you know works. Alternatively, try switching the DVD player off completely at the wall socket for 30 seconds, then power it again and see if that clears the problem.
Best wishes..
