Documents and program files?

Hello. whats an easy way to change the default location of douments and program files so rather than it using C: Drive it will use D: Drive? thanks in advanced.

    i know how to do that but with programs you install that does not let you change the location its going to install in i want the default program files on D:....

In the program go to file, save as, select D: etc.etc.
to the location you want (e.g.save as D:\my documents\ Class)

First of all, yes you CAN re-direct the 'my documents' folder to another location....be it on an internal or external drive volume. This requires careful adjustments to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folder

when you do this, you can assign any path to the "my documents" folder, (and also the others listed,) this will be a permanent change and will cause that path to be the new destination for files saved to 'my documents' by the OS. the actual path does not HAVE to even have the word 'documents' in it...you could call it E:\bubbles if you want.

You would continue to 'save' your new docs to 'my documents', the OS would just be interpreting a new and different destination for the Save.

Should that resource become unavailable, you would have to perform a 'save-as' and then specify a valid save location.

If you are doing this because of limited space on your C-drive, well and good, but if not, then consider Drive synchronization software instead.
These software programs allow you to specify single, or multiple folders, to copy files. you would set it up to copy from your pc to the same-named folder(s) on the external drive, and to propagate changes....so it will save files that are new or changed and delete files that were deleted, (this can be suppressed.)

One of the pitfalls of using USB devices is that drive letters are typically assigned automatically. If you do not manually assign a drive letter that is not typically accessed by the fist say....4 USB drives, it is possible for the PC to become confused and start putting files to the wrong USB device. So assign your external a high drive letter like P for portable, and don't forget to include that in the new 'path' you put in the registry.

As the size of hard drives increase, more people are using partitions to separate and store groups of files.

XP uses the C:\Program Files directory as the default base direstory into which new programs are installed. However, you can change the default installation drive and/ or directory by using a Registry hack.

Go to :-

- Start > Run

- Type "regedit" (without '' " NOOBS!)

- Go to this Directory...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

- Look for the value named ProgramFilesDir. by default,this value will be C:\Program Files. Edit the value to any valid drive or folder and XP will use that new locations as the default installation directory for new programs.

Recovery drive is full and program files going to Recovery


The Recovery Drive is Drive D. Somehow the destination of the Documents and Settings got changed to this drive. Restore the My Documents Folder to Its Default Location

To restore the My Documents folder to its default location, follow these steps:

Click Start , and then point to My Documents.
Right-click My Documents, and then click Properties. Click Restore Default, and then click OK. In the Move Documents box, click Yes to move your documents to the new location, or click No to leave your documents in the original location.

Autorun.inf doesn't open file in internet browser


Hello ksharp628,

I use a program called autorun.exe One limitation of the standard AutoRun facility is the fact that it will only run executable programs; it will not by itself open document files such as web pages or text files. AutoRun.exe is designed to circumvent this restriction: it will open any number of document files or start executable programs. Moreover, it is smart enough to use a sensible fall-back strategy if no documents can be opened, perhaps because the target system does not have the required support for those document types.

in root of thumb drive I have Autorun.exe Autorun.inf MSN.html and my ICON msn.ico wich i did a search for on my computer

my edited msn.html file open in txt format

You can replace with what ever website you want and rename it to that.

This autrun.inf setup will popup the autrun box and ask you pick an option. this is as close to running the webpage when inserting the usb drive. The program comes with a .pdf on many options wich can be used with autorun.exe.

Hard drive


For programs installations you would have to manually change, redirect or point the program folder locations to the Lenovo disk ( E:/ or F:/ , etc, etc).For all other personal documents, image files, music files, video files you would have to do the same thing, go that programs (whichever program you use) options or preferences and edit the default file save locations to point to the Lenovo ( E:/ or F:/ , etc, etc) instead of your C:/ drive

I am using pc to pc file transfer for dummies I know how to hook it to both computers but I have no idea how to drag files I have windows vista


Windows Easy Transfer is installed with Vista and can be found under Accessories - System Tools or by searching for "easy" (with out quotes).

You can transfer files and settings using a network share, or transfer files and settings using removable media such as CD/DVD, or an external hard drive.
Windows Easy Transfer does not migrate installed applications (see Windows Easy Companion below)
Using Windows Easy Transfer, you can migrate most files and program settings. Below is a table describing the types of data and settings that can be moved.

Data Type Specifics Files and Folders Any files found in My Documents, My Pictures, and Shared Documents folder will be selected to be moved automatically. You can also add other documents that are in other locations. E-mail messages and Settings E-mail messages, contacts, account settings, and address books from Outlook Express, Outlook, Windows Mail, and other programs. Program Settings Programs that are compatible with Vista will have their settings transferred to the new Computer. In order for this to work the program must already be installed on the Computer running Vista. User Settings Desktop settings, color settings, screen savers, fonts, Windows options, printers, etc. Internet Settings Favorites, cookies, and Internet Explorer settings. Pictures, Video, and Music Music files, playlists, and album. Pictures (gif, jpg, bmp files) and personal videos.
