The manual says: It may take a long time to delete a lot of images by selecting [All images]. It is recommended that you delete images on a computer or format the recording medium using the camera. on page 88. You also should read item 6 on "read this first" about the memory card. If pictures are protected, you can't delete them in the camera.
The Read Error message displayed on the Camera when accessing the images which was not recorded correctly. This may also happen when the Memory Stick is corrupted to record or read the files. Please check if the message is displaying when accessing all the images. If it happens with all the images, then it may be an issue with the Camera or the Memory Stick.
To check if the issue is with the Memory Stick, try using a different Memory Stick and check if the message displays. This may also happen when an attempt was made to play back the image or the movie that was not recorded on this camera.
Try to wipe the contact area on the Memory Card with a soft, dry cloth. It may be necessary to format the Memory Card (Format option is available in the Setup 2 Menu of the Camera). If the message still appears, service may be required.
Troubleshooting the camera displaying Communication Error when connected to the computer via USB.
If the camera displays "Communication Error," when trying to download images the main cause for this error is that there are more than 1000 images stored on the memory card. It is recommended if there are more than 1000 images on the memory card, that you use a card reader to acquire the images, or to delete images off of the memory so that there are less than 1000 images to download from the memory card.
If this is not the case, there are not 1000 or more images on the memory card, try reconnecting the camera to abnother port on the computer, try another cable or another computer. This error can also display when connecting to a direct print printer. Please check with the printer manufacturer for more information on this error.

It's very hard to troubleshoot software problems online, and it likely is a software issue. But why put up with the headaches of bad software in the first place? Please see the following post, as it describes the use of a card reader as a much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos. Note that card readers are also VERY inexpensive. Just make sure you get one that's stated capable of reading your S200's CF card.: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2009/01/how-do-i-download-photos-or-pictures.html
You can download trial versions of these programs, and test to see ifthe program can find your images, but have to pay to register thesoftware before it will actually recover the images.
You may also need to use a card reader to read the data from the card, rather than read the card while it's in the camera connected to your computer. Card readers are relatively inexpensive (less than $20) and can be bought at most camera and computer stores.

If your SD memory card contains more than 1,000 images, the camera will display "Communication Error". Use a card reader (if available) to import your images into the computer, or see about having some CD's made at a photofinishing business.
try using the "format" option from the set-up menu. That should wipe everything off the card, and get rid of any "bad" data that has accumulated over time. If you want to only erase selected images, try the erase option again, but make sure to wait until the green light comes on before proceeding.
