Did you try charging your battery or taking the batteries out and putting fresh ones in?
take everything out put fresh batteries in and powering it on.
If the problem still occurs then either your friend is not telling the
truth, maybe a drop occured, or by misfortune your screen went out. If
it is still new it may be under warranty. try contacting NINTENDO. you
may get it fixed for free.

Nintendo of America Inc. ("Nintendo") warrants to the
original purchaser that the hardware product shall be free from
defects in material and workmanship for twelve (12) months from
the date of purchase. If a defect covered by this warranty occurs
during this warranty period, Nintendo or a NINTENDO AUTHORIZED REPAIR
CENTER will repair the defective hardware product or component,
free of charge. The original purchaser is entitled to this warranty
only if the date of purchase is registered at point of sale or the
consumer can demonstrate, to Nintendo's satisfaction, that the product
