To slave a hard disk, first you must set its jumper setting to slave because if you dont set it, your system will be on chaos because the system will be confuse who will be its master harddisk. so after setting it, power on and check at its BIOS if your new hard disk is registered to the system.

How change prymari device?

You can either look into this online manual or follow the instructions given below.
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim4700/en/om/Y69490LRs.pdf

In the case of loading a particular Operating System(OS) from a specific Hard Disk, you can change the boot priority from BIOS (Hope you know to get into BIOS) as shown in the picture
1_7_2012_2_50_00_pm.png

Or if you want to change the physical configuration of your Hard Disks to Master and Slave, then follow these steps.
  1. Open up the side panel of your PC Case.
  2. Disconnect all the wires from both Hard disks.
  3. Look over the labelled top part of each hard disk to know the settings of JUMPER PIN so as to set it as primary(master) or secondary(slave). Please note that if you are using IDE hard disk, this may be enough. But in the case of SATA, inspite of this, you may also require to install RAID Driver after connecting them back into the computer. These drivers can be downloaded from http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriversHome/NeedProductSelection (You may require to set up your product manually and download Serial ATA drivers)
  4. (Connect them back, Screw up- if you haven't done it already). Now you may be able to use the required hard disks as primary(master) and secondary(slave).
You can also watch two videos of changing jumper of the hard disk. But be careful while replacing jumper. Any incorrect configuration or jumper setting or damage of pin may cause in device failure or result in damage of your hard disks. If you have any further doubts, feel free to ask me...

I need to wipe the hard drive how do i do it?

Connect the disk as a "slave" disk-drive in another computer.
Open "My Computer".
Right-mouse click on the icon for the "slave" drive.
Click "format".
Do not choose "quick-format".
Click OK to write "zero" values all over the disk-drive.

Sometimes it is easier to install a new hard disk and reinstall Windows.
Then either connect the old hard drive as a slave drive (don't forget to set the jumper on this drive as a slave). The other way is to connect the old hard drive to a USB hard drive adapter and connect it to a working computer's USB port. this computer will see it as an external hard drive (provided the hard drive is still functioning).
Either way you can download and backup your files.

No hard disk found

Your hard disk has failed or the disk is not connected correctly.

Check data and power connections
Check Master/Slave jumper on disk if it is not a SATA drive
Press F2 or DEL at boot to access motherboard setup and see if the disk appears

If you still don't see your disk it has failed.
Have a computer service shop perform the work and assist you with installing...might be cheaper to buy a new computer...

If this helps, please vote for this solution.

Can I use this Hard Drive as a slave on my PC ?.

Hey,

Ofcourse you can, look at the top of the hard drive to find the jumper settings lable, change the jumper so the drive is slave.

Then connect it to your computer with a ide cable, if you have another hard drive on the same cable the other hard drive needs to be set as master, and be preferably on the end of the cable and slave on the center of the cable.

Then check your bios / cmos / cmos setup / computer setup, right when you turn on the computer to see if the hard drive is detected and properly installed.

heres a video on how to use bios
http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to/video/how-to-use-bios-69712/

if everything is okay it should show up in windows, if it doesn' then right click on my computer, select manage, then on left side select disk management, you may have to initialize and or partition the disk first before it shows up on my computer.

Thanks and good luck.

I have a new hard drive which the computer does not regocnize.

There's a label of your jumper setting for your hard drive located at the top of your hard disk. If you have two hard drives, You must place the jumper of your hard drive as master and the other hard drive as slave. If you only have one hard disk drive, set the jumper as master and your cd drive as slave.

My computer will not read any of my disk or install

when you say disk did you mean hard disk? if you do... did you recenlty install a new hard disks?... if you did... did you check the jumper-master-slave configuration when installing the new hard disk?
only one hard disk can be configured as master in each ide channel. set up to master (not single) the one on the end of the ide cable and set up to slave the one attached to the midlle of the ide cable.
check that both hard drives are properly attached to the cable and that the power cable is properly seated.

when you say disk did you mean cd rom disks or dvd disks?
does it work in other computers? if it doesnt.. you cd/dvd disks may be the problem
are you trying to read a dvd disk on a cd rom only drive... you can't read a dvd in a cd rom drive.
if you cd/dvd rom drive should read the disk you're putting in, check in device manager if your system detects the cd/dvd rom drive. if it doesn't: check the physical connections (reseat ide cable, check jumper configuration for slave and master on your cd/dvd rom drive and check that the power cable is properly seated), check also in device manager the properties of the cd/dvd rom drive and check if it says on device status if the device is working correctly. if it doesn't post the error code that it may give you or google a solution with error code.

suggestion.. be more specific when posting your questions.. that way it will be easier for a solution to be provided as your issue could be interpreted in different ways

Hard disk

first be sure the drive is a vaible drive.....meaning it should be in it;s originbal PC it came out of and able to boot up on the installed OS. If it can then you are in luck..... install the drive you want to copy to as a slave and use a program like DriveCopy or Norton Ghost to copy the entire drive.....or if you are just after select files, you can use the copy/paste method to the drive. By trying yo use the drive in a different PC it will not boot since it has the other PC's drivers on it =( If the drive will not detect in it's native machine then most likely the drive is lost (unless you pay to clean room recover the contents....spendy!) Let mem know if you need more help!

Hi silverend,

I have some questions and some recommendations for you...

The original problem of the system not booting might have been temporarily compounded by moving it to a different system as a secondary or slave disk. You'll want to make sure that is not an issue 1st b4 continuing w/ trouble-shooting or testing the failed disk.

(01) Is the hard disk installed in the same computer it was running in properly before?

(02) If not, was it the Master of 1st drive on the previous system - the system where it originally failed? In other words, did it contain a boot volume? (Was it the disk that the system used to boot off of?)

(03) You said the file system is FAT. Is that FAT16 or FAT32?

(04) Does the drive have an operating system on it? If so, what operating system is it?

(05) Are you sure the jumpers are set correctly for the configuration you have it in now (slaved to your master drive)?

(06) Check to see if the drive jumpers are set for LIMITED CAPACITY? (See HERE for more information regarding jumper settings on Seagate hard disks.)

(07) Are you using a MASTER/SLAVE configuration for your two hard drives or are you using CS (cable select)? If you are using CS, both drives must be jumpered to CS and the primary (MASTER) drive should be the LAST drive on the cable (at the end).

The drive may very well be, physically, fine. However, the best way to determine that is to...

1st, Ensure that the jumper settings are correct for its current configuration (slaved to your master hard disk or as a secondary CS disk on the primary EIDE controller) and...

2nd, run diagnostics on a hard disk using boot media rather than from w/in an operating system. This is a much more reliable and thorough means of testing your hard disk.

I recommend that, once you've determined that your jumper configuration are correct (for BOTH hard disks), you run Seagate's boot diagnostics (Seagate Utilities) to test the hard drive.

(07) Do you have any data that needs to be recovered off of this drive? If so, let us know and we'll help you to recover it.

(08) If not, you can use the Seatools diagnostics to write zeros to the drive effectively erasing it and along w/ any corruption. This will allow for a more thorough surface test, too as the diagnostics will test the surface while writing to it. (This is a last result, however. Particularly if you have an operating sytem, data, etc. that you'd like to preserve.)

Please, let us know if this response was helpful for you or, of course, if you have any further questions.

Thank you
BJ
