Do you mean the internal cooling fan and cooking cavity light?

I'm guessing these are not the ones you mean, but if so, please reply back and I'll address that.

I'd bet you mean the exhaust vent fan and cooktop work lights?

If you mean the latter, the problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide for $39.95 postpaid.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

This can often also affect the exhaust fan operation, too. The lights and fan can be inoperable or stuck on too.

Is the internal cooling fan working when you cook?

If not, the magnetron will overheat, and the unit will draw excessive current.

Otherwise, I would suspect the inverter.

Due to the complexity and lethal voltages used and produced in inverters, I do not recommend that an inexperienced person work on repairing an inverter.

It just quit while cooking. Is there afuse in this microwave?

If the model number is correct, there is a 125V, 20 AMP line fuse inside the microwave. Its usually mounted at the point where the power cord enters the back of the unit. You will need to UNPLUG the microwave oven and remove the exterior case to access. The case comes off in various ways depending on manufacture and model. I found this illustration at pcappliancerepair.com based on the model number you listed this question under:

http://pcappliancerepair.com/model-display.php
The line fuse is listed as item 12.

You can usually purchase a box of fuses at a hardware store for just a little more than what the manufacturer charges for a single fuse. 125V, 20AMP Ceramic Slow Blow fuses are recommended.

If you have any questions, or need additional assistance troubleshooting, please post back and let me know. I hope you find this information helpful.

NOTE: Make sure you take any resistance readings with the microwave UNPLUGGED and the component under test isolated (removed) from the circuit.

I have this unit and it just stopped working. NOTHING! NADA! My wife said the circuit had flipped but no one was cooking anything at the time. Do these things just short out? Lights, fan and microwave...

If the model number is correct, there is a 125V, 20 AMP line fuse inside the microwave. Its usually mounted at the point where the power cord enters the back of the unit. Unfortunately, you will need to uninstall the oven, UNPLUG it and remove the exterior case to access. The case comes off in various ways depending on manufacture and model. I found this illustration at searspartsdirect.com based on the model number you listed this question under:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/showSubComp.pd?imageUrl=http%3a%2f%2fc.searspartsdirect.com%2flis_png%2fPLDM%2f50026410-00007.png

The line fuse is listed as item 8 (part number 3B74133K). There is a another fuse listed as item 2 (part number 3B72974C), but this is a thermal fuse for the fan motor.

You can usually purchase a box of fuses at a hardware store for just a little more than what the manufacturer charges for a single fuse. 125V, 20AMP Ceramic Slow Blow fuses are recommended. If you wish to order on line, use the part numbers to search by comparison as the model number you listed this question under is not available at all the websites I have provided. The parts, however, ARE listed.

If you have any questions, or need additional assistance troubleshooting, please post back and let me know. I hope you find this information helpful.

NOTE: Make sure you take any resistance readings with the microwave UNPLUGGED and the component under test isolated (removed) from the circuit. To answer your initial question, "yes", these ovens can blow a fuse by simply sitting idle. This can occur from any power fluctuations, brown outs, voltage spikes, etc. Or, it could be the symptom of a component that may have failed. If you find any of the internal fuses blown and replace it, only to have it blow again, you have a more significant problem than a simple blown fuse.

I have a GE Microwave Model JVM1540LM2CS. It started making funny noises like a fan or gear grinding and then it quit working altogether. I have checked the circuit breakers in the house and have...

sounds like the mag fan went out and blew the internal fuse they are ceramic fuses 15 or 20 amp available at hardware stores ,if this blows again it could be the mag overheated, but the thermal breaker should have shut it off before this, thenit can also be your h.v. diode or capacitor shorted

It stopped working yesterday. The light works, the fan works the timer counts down if you attemp to use it but it doesn't turn on to cook. It was purchased in 05.

There is normally a fuse internally accessible that can be user replaced. Fuses can fail due to metal fatigue; the flexing that occurs when current flows and stops. The high voltage circuit customarily is fused separately from the control circuitry and the high voltage circuit needs a fairly high amperage fuse; possibly up to 20 amps.

Removing the housing generally requires the removal of a few screws (done AFTER the plug has been out for a while) and lifting off of the housing.
Look for a longish (20-25mm - ~1 inch) ceramic cylinder in some type of fuse holder. If you have any kind of multimeter at home (everyone should, they are cheap) you can check if the fuse has continuity, if not, most of the large chain hardware stores will have the replacements; buy two. If another fails, don't bother to replace it, that is a sign of another component failure.
If the magnetron hasn't shorted, a repair is marginally economical.
If you still have the warranty conditions, you might check to see if the magnetron has a longer warranty than the whole unit; they once were warranteed for 5 years but if only the fuse has failed, Sharp will probably charge for the repair.
You can buy a usable digital multimeter at Radio Shack or auto parts stores for under $20 or if near a Harbor Freight tool store, under $10.

Power went out while cooking. Now light, and fan doesn't work either. Could there be a fuse?

Assuming that you have checked the voltage/breaker at the unit, There is a fuse located behind the user interface. You must exercise caution in this area as there is a high potential for harm due to the capacitor having been energized. If you are not comfortable/experienced handling high voltage, then I would strongly recommend calling for service. Hope this helps... Bill

Where is the fuse located

It would be helpful if you could reply back with your brand and model number, but I can give you a good answer without it.

First of all, this won;t be a problem with the fuse. When a microwave's fuse blows, the unit will be dead.

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch, a loose door switch mount, or a problem on the control panel.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside. Its continuity must be checked.

Door switch or mount trouble can be caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

If you someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

If yours is not listed, please reply back with your brand and full model number.

If you think the problem is on the control panel, which we repair these nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid.

Microwave stopped working completely

Fan turned on after cooking because a thermostat got to hot and tripped turning on the fan to try to cool the unit.  The unit went completely dead when thermal fuse tripped which is located above the cavity on the left side.
