Question about IBM ThinkPad R31 2656 Notebook
We have an R31 with a Pentium III 1.13 GHz processor. It runs XP Pro. Here is the problem:
-If it powers up at all, it sometimes will run way past the boot cycle for an hour or so and then shut off without warning. Sometimes it will start and try to boot up, then shut off without warning.
-If it is in the docking station, usually it will power up and stay running, unless it is moved. Then it will shut off.
-The times that it does not power up (usually when it is out of the docking station), occasionally there will be a "sizzling" noise coming from the area underneath the laptop where it docks (underneath the power button more or less). When this happens, if I press the power button, it will not power on, but the keyboard light at the top of the screen will illuminate while the power button is being pressed. Sometimes if I smack the underside of the laptop with my hand, it will stop the "sizzling" noise and might start up (but not stay running for long)
Things I have tried:
- swapping batteries, no difference
- running without a battery just plugged in with AC adapter, no difference
If anyone has ANY suggestions and/or insight to what the problem might be, I would be forever grateful! Right now the laptop is a paperweight.
Thank you so much.
