D-Link Switch We have a d-link DES-1226G 24 port switch. When we connect it up everything functions OK for about 20 minutes. We have bout 20 computers connected but only 5 are active. After a short time every light on the switch turns on (rather than just active ones blinking) and nothing works. We power the switch down and then on power up the same thing happens. Works for about 20 minutes before lighting up and freezing.

It seems to be a flash problem or due to high temperature. if it so you can add fans inthe switch

if it is flash problem you need to replace the flash

it will replaced at dlink service provider

Well in your case, somethings wrong with your switch, because it doesnt work in a full scale operation, it will just work for 20 mins, well, theres no existing kind of performance like that.

you better replace that one with another brand. well, you try to use 3com or CISCO, well you could use linksys, its from CISCO but catering the small business side.

Hi,

Dust can be a massive cause of problems on a motherboard as it acts like a blanket causing components to overheat and sometimes conducts small amounts of electricity. Many boards on this condition are basically fried and need replacing. You could try a 24 pin power supply but i doubt that will make any difference as you have done everything to restore it.

Test whether it is the Power On switch, or the Power Supply. Since the LAN card bit the dust, you may be looking at a worse problem, though.

Bypass the Power On switch.

If the Power Supply comes on, the problem is the switch.

If the Power Supply does not readily come on, the problem is the Power Supply.

To bypass the Power On switch, you will be using a jumper wire on the
24-pin ATX main power cable connector.

Motherboard orientation:
Processor to the top, Ram Memory slots to the right.

The 24-pin ATX main power cable connector on the motherboard, is to the near right, of the number 4 Ram Memory slot.

Number 7 - main power connector (ATX_POWER), is the
24-pin ATX main power cable connector, on your motherboard.

Referring back to the Playtool link, you will see a wire with Green insulation on it.
This is the Soft Power On wire. (PS_ON)

A jumper wire is used to connect it to ANY Black wire.
ALL Black wires are Ground wires.

[This is a DC circuit. There is a Positive, and a Negative.
A Ground wire is a Negative wire.

The green Soft Power On wire, is a positive wire containing 5 Volts.
You are completing a circuit.
The Soft Power On circuit.
You are bypassing the Power On switch]

There is no splicing of the wires to connect the jumper wire.
The jumper wire will go down into the socket holes, of the 24-pin ATX main power cable connector.

One end of the jumper wire goes down into the socket hole, containing the green Soft Power On wire.
The other end of the jumper wire goes down into a socket hole, with ANY Black wire.

The 24-pin ATX main power cable, is connected to the 24-pin ATX main power cable connector, on the motherboard.
Just as shown in the photo to the far right on the Playtool link.

The back of the 24-pin ATX main power cable's connector, is where the wires come in.
(The front of the power cable's connector is plugged into the motherboard)

I use a jumper wire that is approximately 3 inches long. (7.62cm)
An insulated wire. Both ends of the insulated wire are stripped of insulation, approximately 1/2 inch. (1.27cm)

One bare end of the jumper wire, goes down into the socket hole of the Green wire. Right next to the wire.
It has to go pretty far down in there.

At the end of each power wire, going into the 24-pin ATX main power cable connector, is a metal terminal pin. (Actually is a round hollow metal pin)
The jumper wire's bare end Must touch that metal pin.

The other end of the jumper wire, goes down into ANY socket hole with a Black wire.
(ALL Black wires are Ground wires)

Power Supply (Computer) plugged into power, the jumper wire is inserted.
The contact is a very BRIEF one. No more than 2 seconds.
(The Power On switch is a Momentary Contact Switch)

I suggest you also check the 12 Volt power rail. Check it with everything plugged in, inside the computer, and the computer on.
You need the Power Supply to have a load to get an accurate test.

There are 3 Voltage power rails in the Inspiron SMPS.
(Switched-Mode Power Supply, or just Power Supply for short)

A) The 3.3 Volt power rail
B) The 5 Volt power rail
C) The 12 Volt power rail.

The main one to check is the 12 Volt power rail.
[Orange wires are 3.3 Volt.
Red wires are 5 Volt.
Yellow wires are 12 Volt ]

The Positive (Red probe lead of the multimeter, is connected to any Yellow wire, coming out of the Power Supply.
The Negative (Black) probe lead of the multimeter, is connected to any Black (Ground) wire.

See if there is an unused standard 4-pin Peripheral power cable.
It has 1 Red wire, 1 Yellow wire, and two Black wires.
Connect to the Yellow wire, and to one of the Black wires.

[Multimeter function set to DC Volts. If it has it, set it to the 0 to 50 Volt scale]

11 to 13 Volts is Okay, but I prefer the voltage to closer to 12.
11 Volts indicates it's time for a new Power Supply.

measuring 12v at the psu is not enough. the psu have several voltage outputs ranging from 12volts to 3.3 volts and maybe even 2.2 volts.. firstly, check all onboard USB ports, a bent or shorted pin in a USB port will prevent the psu from operating. next, the psu has a safety connection to the mainboard, this is called the power good signal ( pwrgd) and it is a signal from the psu to the mainboard and tells the mainboard that everything in the psu is functioning correctly. If the powergood signal is lost ( drops from 5volts to zero volts) the mainboard will issue an interuppt to the cpu and the cpu will shut down, this will also shut the board down to prevent damage and data loss. mainboards all use pretty much the same connectors so your board will have either a 20 pin power connector or a 24 pin one. It may also have an additional 4 pin connector to power the cpu and northbridge functions. use a known good psu and plug this into your board along with the 4 pin connector and attempt a switch on. If the system begins to boot, replace the psu. if not, try unplugging or removing everything connected to the board, pay special attention to expansion cards and usb ports. remove the ram sticks and video cards if fitted, then attempt to boot again. if the system does not respond, replace the main board. if it now begins to boot, refit everything one item at a time and try starting the machine. turn off before refitting the next item and start the machine up again. when you get to the problem item, the machine will stop starting. If all else fails, replace the mainboard or take the machine to a reputable repairer..

For your type of varity the ideal harware would be a router. Preferably netgear.

Internet no longer working, but internal network is fine.


i agree with all the above.. it's definately clear as mud how the network is designed and or funtioning. The machines connected to the wireless d-link router.. are they via cat5 inthe wired ports or wireless ? is the server the machine thats connecting to the switch and wiress router and modem? i'd say reset all switches modems routers and machines.. shut them all down.. then fire the cable modem, then the wireless router then the desktop switch then the server, the workstations and the one lonely wireless.. run "ipconfig /all" on all machines and if they aren't all sharing common ips and access, provide the results here for further investigation.

Only one computer is able to connect to the internet even though i have 2 connected to the router


Well the modem should be connected to the UPLINK port on the router(the port without a number) both computers should be connected to the numbered port. Ensure you do NOT have a problem with one of your cables.

I have a d link DES-1105. cant get more than one computer to work on hub/switch.


Hi!
Unfortunately, hubs or switches cannot be use to share internet access specially if it's connected to a modem. To share internet access, you will need a router. If you prefer not to use a router, you can enable ICS (Internet Connection sharing) on one PC and share internet access to the others. However, the PC that will share internet access will need two ethernet cards (or LAN cards).

Your setup will look like this:

If internet is not a concern, and you just want to connect the computers to share files and resources, you will have to se your computers to static IP. You do not need any additional device - just connect your computers to the hub, setup a static IP on all the computers.

If you need further assistance setting up static IP on the computers, please reply and I'll give you the step by step instruction for that.

For any setup, a router will be the best option.
