on older tranes if 120v power is reversed it would do that try switching leads on pigtail to board. make sure to unplug first!

Coleman mach furnace wont stay running. i turn the thermostat down until i hear it click, then i turn it back up to get the furnace to kick on.works sometimes and sometimes not. blower will always kick on...


Hi, I don't know if you are still having a problem, but it sound like the flame sensor on the unit is dirty and need to be cleaned. If it has a automatic pilot, it will have a flame sensor. Its made of porcelin with a metal rod coming out the end, laying next to the pilot flame. Just 1 screw holds it in place. Remove it and clean the tip with steel wool or a piece of sanding cloth. If you don't have this set up, I would need more info on the unit, model and serial number. You may also have a faulty thermostat, but I do believe it is a flame sensor.

The goodman furnace will try and light three time before it faults out for safety reasons. Adjust the flame sensor so that it is closer to the flame or actually in the pilot flame. If the flame sensor is inside the pilot flame and still does not stay lit, your flame sensor is probably defective and should be replaced. You can get one at Ferguson's counter sales.

The furnace will light up and the fan will blow but the flames cut out before my house reaches temp. i have the thermostat set at 70 and the house will not get above 55. i have tried turning the propane...


First, for those of you who might not know, "What is a flame sensor?" A flame sensor is a safety device. When your furnace's main burners ignite (light Up) the flame sensor picks up the heat from the furnace's main burning and says, "YES," and sends a signal back to the main furnace control board saying that it is OK to let the main burner stay on. Or if the main burners do not ignite, the flame sensor does not pick up the heat and says, "NO" to the main control board, Shut That Gas Valve and Main Burners Down! Thank God we have safety controls like the flame sensor. Most of the time, after turning your furnace's power off, you may clean the flame sensors with light sand cloth, emery cloth or steel wool. Reinstall the flame sensor and you are back in business! Over the years flame sensors can build up a light coating of burned-in dust and dirt. This insulates the flame sensor so that it doesn't sense the heat of the flame well enough, so by cleaning it you have almost restored it to its new condition. Seldom, but sometimes they do go out completely.

Try the following step.....

On a call for heat, the 24 volt thermostat sends a signal to the control module. The control module will indicate a call for heat with a light on the control either blinking or remain solid depending upon model. The inducer (exhaust) blower will purge all gasses from the furnace and pressurize a pressure switch. Once the pressure switch tells the module to continue, the electronic ignition will energize and send 120 volts to the igniter. The igniter will glow and you will be able to see it if viewed thru the small inspection port. Once the igniter gets hot enough, it sends a signal to the module opening up the gas valve (24 volts). Either a pilot will come on or the burner tube will ignite then spread the flame to all burners. Lastly a safety sensor will be looking for a certain temperature within a few seconds and the furnace will continue to operate and the room air blower will turn on in a minute or two.

What could go wrong? The unit will not run if there is no signal from the thermostat (bad thermostat or broken wire), the control module does not sense a signal from the thermostat (bad control), the inducer does not energize (bad motor), the pressure switch does not close (blocked vent piping, bad switch, plugged condensate hose), the igniter does not energize (bad control, bad igniter), the gas valve does not open or there is no gas (bad gas valve, broken wire, no gas), the pilot does not light (dirty pilot), the burner does not light (bad burner, plugged orifice, not enough combustion air), the flame does not spread to each burner (bad flame spreader, dirty flame spreader, more bad burners), the flame safety sensor does not detect flame (dirty or bad flame spreader, bad flame sensor, broken wire, bad control), or the room air blower does not energize (bad fan motor, bad control).

Flame sensor oxidation problem?????


make sure you have good contact at ignition control module. if wire comes off easy crimp wire terminal with pliers until its hard to pull off. also make sure green ground wire is tight. make sure sensor is with in 1/8 in of flame. If unit is being used alot your doing the correct thing by cleaning.

Shorted out gas heater power getting to box but heater wount startup.


Jump the R and W terminal on the control board. If it tries to start, bad thermostat or thermostat wire. If not, bad board or something else read on for suggestions.

Honeywell Gas Furnace


A Make and Model number of the furnace not the thermostat will help but I can walk you thru the operation of a typical furnace. It sounds to me that the burners are igniting properly but the flame sensor is not sensing the flame and shutting down the system. You will need to find the sensor and clean it and check the wire from it to the control board. Typically, the flame sensor is found at one side or the other of the burner box. It is a small probe that the flame hits. Depending upon your model it may have a small wire attached to it leading back to the control. Or it may be part of your auto-pilot assembly. ? At any rate, you will need to get to it and very delicately brush it off. Then inspect the flame channel. This is a trough area where the flame travels to ignite all burners. Over time, they tend to fill with rust and debris. Take a small screwdriver and run the blade down the trough. Inspect the wire that goes from the flame sensor to the control board. Make sure it is not frayed or broken or shorting out and that the connection at the board is good.

Beyond that, it's time for a technician to come.
