Take the plastic cover off from the inside. Fairly easy, a few bolts and some plastic clips holding it on. You may be able to open it from the outside but you'll have to take the inside cover off to replace the handle anyway. This is a common problem and if you need more detailed instructions just do a search on the net.

SOURCE: The latch handle does not

I would pop off the rear hatch trim to look inside to see what is broken. Usually there are a bunch of push pins that hold the trim in place.

2005 gmc denali cannot open rear passenger door from outside

do you mean when opening the door with the door handle,if so then does the handle have any resistance or does it move like there is nothing connected to it.if so then the rod that connects the door handle to the latch may have come disconnected, bent or the clips that hold it attached to the handle and latch may have broken or come unfastened.you will have to remove the inner door panel to gain access to this area.

Door handles (exterior)

This won't solve the problem once the latch is broken, but can help keep you from breaking your door latch on cold frosty days.

Shortly after buying my 99 Park Ave I noticed that the rear door handle on the driver's side was black, instead of painted gold to match the rest of the car. I presume that the previous owner had the problem mentioned above. To avoid breaking the flimsy plastic handles when my doors are frozen shut (which is often during the winter in upstate New York!), I use the remote to unlock the doors, then I open the rear door first. By opening the rear door first you can grab the edge of the door at the wheel well, while pulling gently on the latch. By applying most of the force to the edge of the door at the wheel well you can avoid breaking the door latch.

While the rear door is open you can repeat this process to open the front door, grabbing the edge of the door in the crack created by the open rear door, and lifting gently on the front door handle. (Just make sure the rear door isn't closed in the process or you will crush your fingers!) This approach has worked many times during the last two winters that I have had my Park Ave. Hope it helps others!

Nissan rear door

sound like the link for the handle is broken.
you should have a pull handle near the floor at the driver seat.
if you can open the door with the pull handle. then the link to the latch is broken.
what you need to do is open the rear internal panel to get access to the latch.
