I have a canon elura 65. When I try to connect it to my laptop using
1394 firewire my pinnacle studio or windows movie maker or any other
software does not detect my camera. I tried connecting using USB
(instead of firewire on my laptop, but I get a message that the device
is not recognised. I have already installed the USB drivers provided by
the manufacturer, but that did not help. Please help. More details are
in my post below...

There is a Sony tutorial page for downloading video to computer at THIS LINK
You will need to select Windows as the operating system, then your camera type, then select the type of connection. You are strongly recommended to use i.Link (which everyone else calls Firewire).
There is Sony software called Picture Motion Browser that you can download (you will need the number from your original CD).
If none of that helps, perhaps the driver for the Firewire (IEEE 1394) port on the computer needs to be reinstalled. You can view this driver (if it is installed) by opening the control panel\system\hardware\device manager and looking for IEEE 1394. It should say if there is a problem or if it is working. You can force it to reinstall at this point.
To transfer video from this camcorder to a PC, you need a 1394 cable (also called a "Firewire" cable, and your PC must have a 1394/Firewire connector as well. You can use Movie Maker (which comes with Windows) as the capture software, or you can download Scenalyzer (shareware), Studio (from Pinnacle), or Vegas Movie Studio to do the capture.
This is the latest hardware device that can used for Studio 14.
Check the list.
DVC-130 (There are no 64-bit drivers for this product.)
DVC-170 (There are no 64-bit drivers for this product.)
700-PCI (a.k.a. Pinnacle Studio Deluxe 2)
500-PCI (a.k.a. Pinnacle AV/DV)
Any 1394 cards.
Are you using vista 32 or 64 bit system? If Vista 64 bit there is no driver for your device and the only available is 32 bit only. Aside from that you can check also the video cable you were trying to used. If firewire under import/capture tab of Studio 14 you need to select the name of your camcorder or dv camcorder. Check that out and try.
What exactly do you mean doesnt recognize? Is windows not detecting the camera, or is it just pinnacle?
1: Check your camera, some have options that need to be enabled to be able to be detected by a pc, like a "PC mode".
2: Check your firewire cable. Try replacing it with another one.
3: Is your firewire connecting to your mainboard directly or do you have a seperate firewire card? If its a seperate card, try checking its connection to the mainboard.
