Not sure is this actual PSP or play station. If it is Play station It is very possible that there is problem with laser that reads disks. Try to by PSP cleaner and run it and this might fix the issue.
It could be that the outer casing is broken or the disk isn't spinning right inside the outer casing. I had this problem with a game my friend gave me. The case was broken so it didn't work. If the disk doesn't spin fast enough, it will cause a read error . I learned this also. I have seen replacement cases for psp games so you can always put the game in another case.
your son probably dropped his PSP at the time and the UMD drive broke or if your son says he didnt drop it you can get a cutip and softly clean your UMD reader the little bubble sorta in your PSP be carful while doing that
Put a umd inside wait a sec or two open and check if there is a red light, den the lens is fine its most likely that your cd has been scratched. Try using dev-hook or a custom firmware to read games from memcard
