It wont turn on from either the remote or the tv itself. would it be possible to change out the power supply or faulty caps myself? I work with electricity for a living but Im sure working on a tv is different in some ways than my job.

  • candy r Mar 13, 2008

thanks for the help. sounds like i should just trash the tv, probably cost way too much to take it to repair. I know all about caps being able to hold charge and I know all about electronic boards... I would like an easy fix of pulling out a board and just exchanging it. oh well

Does this only happen with the remote , does it turn on ok from the tv buttons?
If it does turn on OK from Tv it could be a problem with you remote or a complicated problem in your set.

If it has the same problem turning on from the TV buttons than the problem most likely lies in the power supply probably faulty capacitors.

Well the best way is to give the job to a professional specially if the tv is expensive! the power supply cannot be changed as this is normally part of the whole board.
If you have done some basic electronics and soldering skills on a circuit board you may try changing the caps, but you must find out which ones to change these normally are next to the switch mode transformer.
Again with out proper knowledge of fault finding there is a risk of wasting your time as it could be something else! it could even be dry joints.
You should try this if you have a friend that has done some electronic work.

Just to add if you decide to do this job yourself make sure you disconnect the main lead first.
You also have to watch the large 400 volt capacitor in the power supply these could still have some voltage when you have similar problems like you have make sure to discharge them with a 2kOhm 5W resistor, so you don't do any damage!

When i turn my tv on it says FDA Lock ON and then it turns itself off and wont come back on. it shows the power button is lit up but it has no picture and no sound. we have tried to reset the password to...

Hello
Your TV is locked I thinks. Do the following and see whether it help you.

Most RCA and GE TV sets use a four digit code to control the v-chip. The code reset is different depending on the model. Try each number until you find the one that works for you.

  1. Hold down the MENU button on the remote and VOLUME DOWN button on the TV it's self at the same time for at least 4 seconds. The set won't say so, but the lock will be unlocked
  2. Hold down the 0 (zero) button on the remote and the VOLUME DOWN button on the TV itself at the same time for at least 4 seconds. The set won't say so, but the lock will be unlocked
  3. Hold down the MENU button on the front of the TV and the TV button on the remote at the same time for at least 4 seconds. 4- Hold down GO BACK button on the remote and MENU button on the front of the TV at the same time for at least 4 seconds.
  4. Hold down EJECT button on the front of the TV set and the MENU button on the remote at the same time for at least 4 seconds. Depending on the model, one of the methods should unlock the V-chip. Now, if desired, you can change the settings on the V-chip by going to the MENU and going to PARENTAL CONTROLS, or on some sets, going to MENU and then going to TV SETUP, then to V-CHIP SET.
OK.

Need remote control code for dish network along with how to instructions. I can't locate my manual for my Zenith

Try this...1) turn on your tv set manually.2) on you dish remote..press and hold the "TV" mode button next to the "SAT" button.when all of the other mode buttons light up, let the "TV" button go...it should be flashing.3) Press the blank power button(The top red button in the top center of the remote).4) press the UP or DOWN button at the rate of about 1 per second until the tv turns off.4) When the tv turns off...press the # key on the bottom right of the remote...this stores the code and you should be ready to go...please try this first..It should work.If the scan doesn't work...The only code for Orion is "694".I hope this was helpful....

How can I reset a Sony Wega tv without a remote control... I stand by button keeps on flashing and the tv wont stay on for more than 3 sec.

You can only reset the TV when you have the remote as it requires holding down the RESET button on the remote control, then pressing the POWER button on the TV front panel. The TV will turn itself off, then back on again. Then release the RESET button.
Regarding your problem with the TV not staying on for 3 seconds, you can try unplugging the unit for at least an hour to perform a hard reset of the microprocessor. If the unit still doesn't stay on, you need to check the power supply or the entire board for any blown or bad capacitor, shorted terminals due to accumulation of dirt, or broken solders. It may be a tedious task and requires an electronic prowess to do.
Kudos and thanks for using Fixya.

take your tv to technician who can check your power supply, if your power is coming on and off, than a problem is not as big. firstly let him check a ht of a supply constantly, your supply is cutting.

Remote codes

You can find the remote control codes for different brands of devices from
http://www.hifi-remote.com/ofa/codes-tv.shtml#tv

If none of the codes work then we have two other solutions:

1. Searching For Your Code

If you have tried all of the set-up codes for your brand of equipment ,or your brand is not listed, and you are still not able to get the unit to respond, try the following procedure to search for your code.
If you don't find a code that works, the remote will flash four times when you reach the end of all the codes for this device type.
  1. PRESS the button for the device you want to program, (TV, VCR, CABLE, etc.), then RELEASE.
  2. PRESS and HOLD the SETUP button until the red LED flashes twice, then RELEASE.
  3. ENTER 9-9-1 (two blinks on the remote)
  4. ALTERNATE slowly between the POWER key and the DEVICE (TV, VCR, CABLE, etc.) button until your device turns off. (On VCR, LD, and CD players use PLAY instead of POWER)
Make sure that the remote is pointed at your device during the search, You may have to press this sequences of buttons up to 100 times to search the entire library of codes.
  5. When your device turns OFF, PRESS the SETUP button and RELEASE it to lock in the code for your device.

2. Learn the buttons from the original

Line up your original remote and the head-to-head before completing the following steps.
  1. PRESS and HOLD the SETUP button until the red LED flashes twice.
  2. PRESS 9 - 7 - 5, the red LED will flash twice.
  3. PRESS the DEVICE key where you wish to learn the function. The next 3 steps must be completed within 10 seconds.
  4. PRESS the button that will receive the learned function, the LED will flash rapidly.
  5. PRESS the button on the original remote to be learned.

Now you can repeat steps 3 through 5 to learn other functions onto other keys or press and hold SETUP until the Cinema's red light flashes twice to lock in your new feature. (If the red light does not blink twice, stop and repeat steps through 6).
To test the new feature, press and release the device key in which the new feature was learned followed by the key on which the feature was learned

Hope that helps! Should you have any further questions, please feel free to post them here.

P.S. - If you find that the solution/answer I provided led you to, or resulted in a fix, please close the ticket with a FixYa! rating. I would be very grateful for your show of appreciation.
If it hasn’t, please do not assign a rating just yet. Please post back as to what steps you took, results, etc, and I will try to assist you further as best I can. I am here at your service.

Thank you for using FIXYA!
