Epson 4180 scanner w/ possible drive belt problem

I initiated a scan and the Epson 4180 scanner made a very loud rattat rattat rattat rattat noise and then ceased operating. I turned the scanner off and then on again and initiated another scan. Got the same loud rattat rattat rattat noise and scanner did nothing.

Looked into the scanner from above without opening the unit. The scan head is forward and apparently will not retract. The toothed plastic belt that moves the scan head appears to have been stretched just a bit but is not broken.

What should I do?

    I've also had this problem.

When I turn on my scanner the indicator light is initially steady green, but then seconds later I hear a rat-a-tat noise and the indicator light begins to flash red. I have toggled the lock on the right side of the scanner to make sure it's in the unlocked position; I've shutdown and restarted my computer; and I've reinstalled the Epson software. Still the same problem.

I have the same problem with the Epson 3140 scanner. I have toggled the locking switch, unconnected and reconnected all cables, uninstalled and reinstalled the software, restarted my computer (Apple PowerBook G4, OS 10.3.9). The light stays green if I don't connect the USB cable. As soon as I do, the light flashed red, which makes me think it's a connection issue, not the scanner itself. I tried a different USB cable, too. Then I tried it on an iBook, and had the same problem.

I read somewhere that, for Macs, you have to custom install the software so that it only loads what is needed for that particular model scanner instead of everything. I had already done that. Just in case, I also tried sinstalling everything. No dice.

Has anyone else had to tweak Epson Perfection scanners in some way for a Mac? I bought it from someone who was running it on a PC.

    Drive belt problem

  • mamagalen Dec 22, 2008

My Epson Perfection 4180 has the exact same problem. You can see inside that the belt has jumped the wheel.  It makes that LOUD noise and spins but the belt does not pull the lens since it's not engaged.

I will try to open it and do what the other poster suggested. Wish me luck! I can't afford a repair because I was laid off and I NEED this for Freelance work!!!!!

Check if you have a toggle lock at the back of your scanner, when you are facing the back of it, its on the right hand side near the tpu cable. toggle that 3x and make sure it on the UNLOCK position.

The problem with my Epson 4180 was broken guide tabs for the bracket that holds the tension pulley. To fix it, I removed the cover and the two small screws inside the holes where the cover posts go. The unit then will come apart by pulling the top (grey) section toward the front. This gives you access to the inside of the unit. There are two very flimsy plastic tabs which hold the moveable bracket in place toward the front of the unit. Both of them had broken in mine. I filed off the remainder of the tabs, drilled a pilot hole on each side of the bracket, and placed a self-tapping machine screw into each of the holes. The heads of the screws then hold the bracket in place, but still allow it to slide and provide the proper tension on the drive belt. Before you put in the second screw, place the drive belt around the pulley and make sure that the bracket is seated against the floor of the inside of the unit. Tighten the screws enough to hold the bracket in place but with enough clearance to allow it to move.

Excellent. Your fix prescribed above works great. I just fixed mine and saved $400 on a new scanner. Michael B. Columbus, OH

Scanning in Epson 4180 perfection - trying to scan slide in home mode - positive film - when it scans the slide in its holder it scans the holder & the slide. What do I need to change?

Make sure the white document matt has been removed from underneath the lid. Then make sure that the document type has been changed from reflective to Film etc. If film is greyed out then check the cable is connected properly from the lid to the base of the scanner.

Scanner has racheting noise and red light stays

This noise is caused by the transport lock. Power the scanner off. Lock and unlock the transport lock a few times and then leave it in the unlocked position again and power on.

My scanner makes a loud noise on start up what is it ?

It is normal for your Epson scanner to produce noise on startup as it calibrates the motor that moves the scan mechanism when powered on. But if this is too loud than normal, it means that there may be already a problem with the motor and must be replaced if it wouldn't give out quality scans. Otherwise, it is working normally.

Grinding Noise in my scanner

Try cleaning the guide bar that the scanning head rides on, apply a thin film of lithium grease on the guide bar

Grinding noise

The most common problem is that the pulley breaks, you might be able to see it through the glass. looks where the belt goes, and see if the pulley is broken.

also, some people forget to unlock the locking mechanism when the unit gets moved, the locking switch is on the side.

EPSON 350 scans 1/2 photo, makes loud clicking noise.

The chassis bends very easily on this model and the problem can be caused by scanner not being on a level base supported by all its feet.

Epson Perfection 4180 croaking

This is a good fairly high spec unit so I am sorry to say that I think you need to get it to a repairer for a quote for repairs and then to decide if it is cost effective to repair or simply replace the unit. Is it still under Warranty?

Good luck.

Awful noise

Please try the following to resolve your issue:
1. Unplug the USB cable and the AC adapter from the back of the scanner.
2. Toggle the Transportation lock (the plastic switch at the back of the scanner) back and forth 5 times, ensuring that the lock is all the way in the unlock position.
3. Reconnect the USB cable and the AC adapter cable, and then try to scan.
