Question about Washing Machines

2 Answers

Washer I have a Maytag Performa PAV2300 model. I have had it less than 5 years. The agitator has come off and won't stay on and now the bottom part of the agitator lifts off and I get oil stains on my clothes. I called my repairman this morning and he told me there is a huge class action law suit against Maytag, who has been bought out by Whirlpool. Apparently Maytag was selling inferior Amana products and putting their name on them. He told me that I am entitled to a new machine from Lowes (where I purchased the machine) but the public was not being notified of any of these complaints and recalls. I have been unhappy with this machine from day one. I often had to rearrange the clothes several times just to get them to spin dry. It also always made an awful noise and moved all over the floor. I have had it looked at several times and it cannot be fixed. I guess Whirlpool now owns Maytag. My question is, how do I get my machine replaced and what company would be responsible for this? Why has this not been made public? My repairman knew immediately what the problem was since he is one of the complainers in this class action suit. Any suggestions?

There are two real possibilities, both are in the washer. The first is
that the gear box seal is failing, and the second is that the fabric
softener dispenser needs to be dismantled and cleaned out.

When the seal starts to fail, this oil floats up into the wash water
in the form of small black drops. The stains are almost impossible
to remove from clothing. Also, as the oil is leaking up, hot soapy
water is leaking down into the transmission, which will eventually
cause it to fail. As I recall, the seal wasn't difficult to replace,
but to get access to it I basically had to disassemble the whole
machine. The hardest part was pulling the agitator off the shaft - I
used a slide hammer puller. I'd start by pulling the agitator off and
see if you can access the transmission seal that way - perhaps yours
will be easier than mine was.

You have to contact Whirlpool directly. The have a fairly decent customer service bureaucracy. You'll have to make plenty of noise and jump through the right hoops, but eventually they make good on their promises.

Can't find where the clutch goes on a Maytag Performa PAV 3300, is it in the transmission?

This washer is a single belt driven model that uses a thrust washer system to release the brake when the motor reverses. In wash mode a 200# spring locks the tub place while the transmission agitates the clothes. The pump cannot remove the water in this direction. In spin mode the the brake is released and the water gets pumped out. Here is a great pictorial that shows how to replace the kit along with a Maytag single belt washer service manual.

Maytag Performa PAVT920AWW noise in wash cycle no agitation. Belt is not broken but in the wash cycle there is no agitation only a bad bearing sound.

Your main tub bearings need replacing at least a 200.00 repair. The parts alone are about 80.00 and a few hours labor.

Loose Agitator

Usually, there is a bolt that holds the agitator on. If you remove the cap off the center of the agitator, you should find a bolt underneath that you can tighten back down. Adding a little thread lock to the bolt wont hurt.

Does not spin

Possible your outlet filter is blocked. This requires cleaning depending on your usage. Clean this out and refit. Good luck. Plug off the wall first.
