This particular unit does take a long time to initialise. Try seitching it on at home and leaving it somewhere exposed to the sky ( not inside etc) It may just need to find out where in the world it is before it can start directing you where to go. If this fails - does your car have a windshield aerial for radio receptionor some kind of electric demisting which may interfere with the signal ?

Have you taken it outside to see if it needs better skyview to get a lock. I also suggest force feeding it the firmware again. You can use Garmin Webupdater to update the unit. It would of updated when you did the map update install but a file may of been corrupted.

Hi, I have a garmin 260W that I use at home ( washington state). I purchased a download for France and downloaded it successfully. I have the map of france, but it is not locating the satellites - (...

When you change the location of your GPS drastically (taking it to another country), it sometimes takes 20-30 minutes for the unit to acquire the satellites and re-set itself for that country. Leave it in an area with open sky, and wait for it to find the satellites, then you should be able to navigate.

I know this solution might be too late for you, but I'm posting the solution in the hope that it can help others with the same problem.

Why does my GPS system have a difficult time locating satellites? It says ''acquiring satellites'' for about 5 minutes. Then it says it can't locate satellites. Should it continue trying? Why does it do...

this is what my navigon says about gettting the gps to connect.

Initializing the GPS receiver
In the upper right-hand corner of the display, the GPS symbol appears. As soon as
data from at least 3 satellites is received, the symbol changes to (GPS Ready). Note: If possible, position the device with a clear line of sight to the sky to successfully
receive messages from the GPS satellites.
Note: GPS initialization requires data from at least three satellites. If GPS data is not
available, the receiver will not initialize.
Note: It can take up to 20 minutes to initialize the integrated GPS receiver for the first
time.
Note: Each time you turn on the device, GPS receiver initialization begins. When GPS
data is available, reception starts within one minute.
If the navigation device has been switched to standby for more than a week, the next initialization
can take up to 10 minutes.

Abnormal Powerdown Error Code

Your battery is dead, which is causing the problem with "slow to receive satellites". Normally when you turn off the unit it will remember the last location and time, then the next time you start the unit it already has the time and current location to acquire satellites, but with a dead battery it has to start from scratch. Check the screen and see if it says "Locating Satellites" or "Acquiring Satellites". Locating satellites will take longer. Replace the battery and your problems should go away.

New Garmin 330 stuck on kansas

Take the unit outside and turn it on. Then select View Maps, at the top of the screen it will say either "Locating satellites" or "Acquiring Satellites". Once the garmin has locked onto the overhead satellites, then it will say "Ready to Navigate".

Locating Satellites take longer than Acquiring Satellites.

Locating satellites

This takes about 15 to 30+ min. Make sure you are in an open area and NO XM or serious receivers turned on!

Locating satellites

Hi cassyd

I have 2 questions in order to help.

1) It can take longer than 30 seconds depending on where you are, how long have you waited for it to acquire?

2) Are you holding the unit verticle while you wait for it to acquire?

If you know your lat/lon you can type that into the position screen while you are waiting for it to acquire, sometimes that helps.
