i had the same problem with my sony walkman. after a while could not delete any file or copy any file to my mp3 although it was playing the songs which were already there- it used to say i/o device error
after stuggling to find a solution on the internet for a while, i went thro sony website for support.
it asks your model number - then tells you to update firmware and device driver- which is free
once i did it
i could copy files and delete. so i thought i will put this on the net to help whoever has similar problems. good luck

i got the same problem but in my usb flash drive.... i can't delete or store data in flash. so i tried the following:
right-click the usb drive go to properties.
click "tools", then "check now", check the;(1)automatic fix file system errors, (2)scan for data recovery of bad sector
you may want to format it after you have done this..
hope i could help

when I plug it into the usb port, the screen turns green, and says ready.
When I click on the mp3 player in my computer, I get the I/O device error message

When I turn it on, it does the color display and stays stuck at the RCA screen, and when I plug it in to my usb port, The mp3 player screen says READY. It installed the software, it said that it's ready to use but when I click on the Removable disk Icon, it says 'E:/ Is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.' Other things work in the E drive fine.
