Possibly the front element of the lens has become contaminated with some foreign substance and requires cleaning. Otherwise, sounds like a trip to repair facility. If it is still under warranty, contact Nikon direct.

When switching it on you have to be sure you remove the lens cap beforehand as an error message will be displayed. If you do not see an error message and the cap is off, you might not have the updated firmware version 1.1. Nikon's website states: "When some new AA lithium batteries were inserted in the camera and the
camera was turned on, the camera sometimes failed to function. This
issue has been resolved." To download go to: http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/18049
I figured out how to fix the flash... but not the clicking sound in the lens. To fix it... click the mode button, then go to the settings icon (the arrow pointing at the wrench), then keep going down to the reset all part. and click okay while your on it. Your flash should work after that!
Hey SandyG1019, If you just purchased this camera 2 weeks ago it might still be within the retailers return/exchange period, and I would suggest you just exchange it for a new one. This error message should mean that something is obstructing the movement of the lens (i.e. sand), but could also be do to a problem with the lens mechanism itself. If you choose to try and resolve the problem you could try blowing compressed air into the side of the lens to try and dislodge whatever is stuck in the lens. This being said I would suggest instead having the camera looked at by an authorized service technician since the camera is most likely covered under a manufacturers’ warranty, and the repair would most likely be free. I hope this helps! Sincerely, Allan Go Ahead. Use Us.
