Question about SimpleTech SimpleDrive 160 GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

Why Are All Files Read-Only Now?

I bought this simpledrive and saved files onto it without problem. Now, I am unable to save any additional files onto it and I get the error message that the entire drive is "read-only." I don't know how or why this happened but I'd like to change it back to being able to save new files and modify existing files.

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

All files saved so far are Read only and I tried to change them using the right click technique suggestion - But, in properties they are not showing as Read only and I can't see any other way to change them.

I have just dragged and dropped onto a memory stick and the files are now not read only???? So maybe problem solved!

Also, I now can't seem to drag and drop onto the SimpleTech. If I just want to drag and drop and not use the auto backup, do I still need to install anything???

I've got 120 GB free on the drive, but get the message that the drive itself is read only -- cannot add any more files.

    What gives?

Exact same issue I am having. Can remove off drive but cannot add as 'read only'??? Have been having this issue since August and didn't think anything about it until now when I really need to add to it. Can anyone help?

That isnt exactly working. I mean that by this.

My external HDD was working fine and I could move files back and forth and use it on other computers and such. Then one day it had a bunch of errors and I did a chkdsk /f. It fixed them. I continued to have errors for about 2 weeks and ended up losing about 100gb of files. No biggie most were just nonsense files anyway. But now when I go to use it on a different computer or when I try to move stuff inside the HDD it says it is write protect and to remove the write protect:(

Windows run doesn't keep my work history

you have to physically save any work
save the history to a usb drive in case you have computer failure

Plug the flash drive into your computer's rectangular-shaped USB drive.

Wait for Windows to recognize the system.

Windows operating systems use "plug and play" technology, which means that computer peripherals like USB flash drives can be recognized instantly by the system without further need for device configuration.

Open the drive on your computer.

Open the "My Computer" directory if using Windows XP or the "Computer" directory if using

Windows 7 or Vista. Locate the flash drive letter and icon under the section named "Devices with Removable Storage." Double-click the flash drive icon to open it.

Transfer files to the flash drive.

Click the "Restore" button in the top-right corner of the "Computer" or "My Computer" directory to shrink the window so that you can view your computer's desktop background.

Open the folders or locations of the files which you want to save to the flash drive.

Click and drag with your mouse each of the files and folders you want to save to the flash drive over to the empty space in the "My Computer" or "Computer" window.

Release the mouse button to let the files "drop."

Close the windows and directory locations when finished.

Save files directly onto the flash drive. From an open file (i.e. text, spreadsheet, image files. etc.), click the "File" menu and "Save as" option.

Select the "My Computer" or "Computer" directory in the drop-down menu at the top of the "Save As" box. Double-click the flash drive letter under the "Devices with Removable Storage" section.

Click the "Save" button to save the file onto the flash drive.

Close the windows and files when finished

hope this helps

-you did not mention what process you used to save the files. Did you use the software that came with the drive to save data? or built-in software of windows? -If you still can, try the manual way of saving files like highlighting files/folders then copying them to the external drive.

Office 2007 saves files in a new set of formats by default. If you colleagues cannot read these files, likely they are not using software compatible with these formats.

You can save these file in other formats by opening the relevant document in Office 2007 and, under "FILE" click "Save As..." and save the document in a compatible format; .doc instead of .docx, for example.

My mac is not let me save on my simpledrive, it lets me take them off file

Check the file system the drive is using under Disk Utilities.

It has probably been formatted as NTFS since you're able to read the files but not write them.

You'll need to Erase the drive under disk utilities and give it the MS-Dos format in order to write files to the drive. If you're ONLY going to use it on a mac then choose Journaled.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

I have a 500g external simple drive. i am getting a message that i can only read on my mac.

Copy all the data onto your Mac computer.

Take the external drive to a PC computer, and "reformat" it, using "quick format".

Take the external drive back your Mac computer,
and write all the "saved" files onto the drive.

Here are some recovery programs you may rely on. Both programs can recover photos, videos and music.

A Tip: Before your items are recovered, do not attempt to save more files the original files(your photos, music) are overwritten.
