Just this weekend our Kenmore/ Whirlpool stopped cleaning dishes. Everything in the machine is still filthy, the soap is not dissolved or even completely out of the dispenser. We tried the four cup test and none of the cups were even wet. We see water in the bottom of the machine, and can hear water coming into the machine.

Bought new spray arms online and installed them inminutes...now the thing works like new... However I have also found that if theheating element goes bad then that also can mess things up bad... So I wouldbuy new spray arms, and also check out the heating element to make sure it isworking... Here is a tip that will help you with the online buying...

We had this a while back - it was something to do with a blocked filter right inside, which meant the hot wasn't coming on. The repair man had to put in a new filter, which had been blocked possibly cos we had been doing quick washes with environmentally friendly detergent, and that solved the problem.
I have the same problem with mine!! It's 6 years old, and I'm running loads of dishes through twice. Even that doesn't help! And I rinse the dishes too, so I have no idea where all these "crumbs" are coming from. Will check back for updates. Hope to get this problem solved!
Heating element may fail. This will lead to the machine stopping part way through its cycle
Pumps. There are 2 pumps in most dishwashers. The drain pump,( which describes itself -it pumps the water out of the machine.) The recirculating pump which forces the water at high pressure through the spray nozzles and arms. (This is how the cleaning action is performed) These pump may either leak, or burn out. Either way, the only solution is replacement.
The most common reason that dishes don't get clean is that a build up of gunk is covering the screen that protects the recirculation pump. This prevents the machine from having enough water pressure to clean the dishes, and leaves a soapy film on everything.
The second most common reason is that the machine isn't filling up with enough water. To test this turn the machine on for a normal load and when it begins to wash, open the door and see if there is enough water in the dishwasher.
To know how much water should be in the dishwasher you will have to consult the manual that came with it, as well as to find out how to access the recirculation pump.
My Whirlpool dishwasher is only 2 years old and I started having the same problems. I dismantled everything I could and washed and scrubbed the entire unit with EVERYTHING..to no avail, dirty dishes!! But I discovered a remedy! Try using Lemi-Shine for about a week with your regular wash-soap. If you are using the tablet form of soap, stop and try the powdered form. Follow the instructions on the Lemi-Shine container. You can find it just about anywhere for around $3.50. I was within "5 seconds" of replacing my 2 year old Whirlpool dishwasher when this caught my eye and I figured why not try it too? After the first wash I noticed a big difference the cleanliness of the dishes..and now it is running GREAT after 2 weeks!
