Mine started out the same way would not play a vhs just shut off and spit tape out for a while then all the sudden the dvd side started doing the same thing. Tried to keep at it and now it makes an awfull clicking noise as soon as I plug it in. Clicks and then shuts off turns back on and then clicks and shuts off. This continues unless we unplug the unit. I am ready to give up but we did find out where the problem is we just dont know what to do to correct it. We are ready to trash it and go buy a new one but this one is only a few months old so we feel its an extra expense that we feel is ridiculous.

SOURCE: magnavox mwd2206

On a unit I checked with this same symptom, removing the top cover allows the unit to stay on and operate normally. There is some sort of sensor at the left middle of the chassis, which, when unblocked by any opaque object, allows the unit to remain on. A temporary fix (not advisable) would be to replace the top cover with a piece of clear plastic or taut saran wrap (no vent holes needed). It's unclear exactly where/what that sensor is from a cursory test. This is a work in progress on someone else's machine that I lack full access to.

The VCR has at least four "heads" two are for 2 hr and two for 6 hour (sp and slp)

It is most likely one of the heads used in the SLP mode is slightly blocked with tape debris--heads need to be manually cleaned in the right way.

VCR playback issues

I had a similar issue with a DVD player, in that it wouldn't play any commercial or rental DVD's, but it would play them if I burned a copy on my laptop. Turned out to be board inside the machine. I had to replace it.

Magnavox ZV427MG9 DVD Recorder VCR Combo plays vcr for about 5 second then stops and shut off, when turned back on it ejects the tape.

This combo has a problem with the vcr unit which take up wheel will stop working and spill the tape. the unit will stop and eject the tape. You have to replace the whole vcr assembly.

VCR tape playback not good

Check your "tracking" If the tape played fine in the old machine, then tracking is the answer, provided that the new machine records good.
