Question about Maytag Atlantis MDE7400AY Electric Dryer

1 Answer

Difficult to start dryer - must pull control **** VERY hard

It has gotten harder and harder to start our dryer (maytag atlantis MDE7400AYW). we must pull the control **** out so that you can see the front panel pulling forward. just pulling till it clicks does not start it. we are not sure what part or parts might be implicated, or if this is something that we can fix without a service call. advice would be appreciated.

sometimes the dryer won't start when we pull the button. We arrange the clothes or we have to take out a lot of clothes so it will start to turn.

When I pull the button to start dryer, it runs for about 10-15 seconds then stops. I can hear the timer mechanism working. Is this also a timer problem, or is there other problems?

You will need a new timer. Unplug the machine. The console has four Phillips screws across the top. After removing those, use a tiny screwdriver to remove the large white disc on the timer ****. Behind that is a square clip holding the rest of the **** in place. There should also be one or two 1/4 in screws holding the timer to the console. Grab the sides of the console and rotate the top down toward you. Now you can reach the quick disconnect to the timer and the plastic tab holding the timer in position.
Good luck!

There are a few different scenarios which would cause the dryer not to start. First, make sure you door switch is functional. Second, the white thermal fuse, located on the exhaust housing may be open. Worst case scenario would be a defective timer or motor. Either of these may not be cost-effective to replace.

The start knob doesn't engage when pulled. Do I just need to replace the knob assembly? Is it difficult?

Take the knob off and try using pliers to pull the stem. Don't pull any harder than you would with the knob. If it works, you just need a knob. If it still won't engage, you need a timer.

Maytag Atlantis MDE7400AYW timer has been replaced but the dryer won't stop drying on it's own. What is the reason? I have the same problem... the timer on mine doesn't seem to work. Any ideas?

The wire connections to the timer may have not been made correctly when it was replaced bypassing the OFF contact in the control circuit.  There should be a wiring diagram inside the front or back panel that you can check.

Removing Timer Knob on Maytag MDE7400AYW dryer

Can anyone help me? I have a Maytag Atlantis that my parents just gave me and my wife. Unfortunately, they accidently removed the model number sticker in the door area. I need to buy a new timer but no one can find which timer to get without the model number. Via the internet, I think I narrowed it down to either the MDE7400AYQ or the MDE7400AYW....but they both look identical to me. Can anyone tell me what the difference between the two is so I can go get the part?
