Question about Computers & Internet
If I understand correctly, you tried to install Win 2000 in order to work around the logon password for the Win. XP install on it, and didn't have a product key to complete the install? If so, you can just boot to an XP disk and reinstall XP, otherwise you'll need to come up with a product key for 2000 to complete it's install (you can pull a valid key from any box with a Win 2000 COA (certificate of authenticity) and that will allow you to complete the install, but may not allow you to register and update, but still may depending on the origin of the Key.
You may also want to check for a restore partition on the Hard Drive, as you may be able to restore the PC to it's original (shipped with) configuration that way also. Ok, I just re read your post and see in the title that it's an older laptop and probably won't have a restore partition, and possibly didn't even come with XP installed, so you may want to check with your Buddies Son and see if he has an OS Disk that you can use to put XP back on it also.
When you say that you removed the battery are you referring to the BIOS battery, or the laptop's?
I hope one of these suggestions helps, Good Luck.
