Question about Computers & Internet

My HP C4180 printer won't print. It will make copies but won't print self-test report. There are two small icons at the bottom left of the printer screen; but they are so small I can't make out what they are. I have been printing regularly until this past Sunday when this occurred. I have checked all connections and they are secure.

I have only tried to print the self test page from the printer and I can't get it to work. I jsut noticed something else (not that it means anything but the screen on the printer used to stay lit the whole time the printer was on. Now it goes dark if not used after a sort period.

  • richhow Mar 12, 2008

The jobs get stuck in the queue but I delete them before trying again. There are no flashing lights or other signs.

  • richhow Mar 12, 2008

I have checked the ink cartridges. They are OK. I have switched the USB cable to another port with no results. Can a cable go that quickly? It had not been touched since operating OK.

  • richhow Mar 12, 2008

Nothing happens. It does not grab paper. The printer screen shows "Print Report" Self-test Report".

  • richhow Mar 12, 2008

Just where do I get another cable compatible with this printer?

Manuals and new drivers for your printer can be found here.

If you try to print a self-test page from the printer itself via the control panel, and it fails, then it doesn't seem like a driver issue.

What happens when you try to print a self-test from the printer itself?

What exactly happens when you follow these steps to print a
    self-test page?

    1. Press
      Setup
      .

    2. Press
      or
      until Print Report
      displays, then press
      OK
      .

    3. Press
      or
      until Self-Test Report
      displays, then press
      OK
      .
Does it just do nothing? Does it try to grab paper, and then stop? Or can you not even get to that menu item?

It's not the cable. You're right- cables don't just up and die, especially in such a short period of time.

If your printer will not do a self-test page, the problem is clearly internal to the printer, not between the printer and your computer.

You should try resetting the printer.

    1. Make sure that the unit is on, and unplug the power cord from the back of the unit.

    2. Wait 30 seconds

    3. On the unit keypad, press the OK and the Help keys simultaneously and hold both keys down while plugging the power cord back in.

    4. The Semi-full Reset message will appear on the unit display.

    5. Wait until the unit initialization process is complete. The unit will have recovered its original settings.

Where is the serial number on an HP Officejet J6480 All-in-One printer

Usually the serial number can be found either in the back or in the bottom of the printer.

If your printer is working you can print a self diagnostic page which would have the serial number.

To print the Self-Test Diagnostic Page
• Device control panel: Press Setup, select Print Report, select Self-Test Report,
and then press OK.
• Toolbox (Windows): Click the Services tab, and then click Print a Test Page.

Won't Print and says that it is out of paper

Hi Salson !

Salson, you have only mentioned that the printer won't print, but plz be clear about the issue, so that I can help you in the best way.

If you are receiving an error "Out of Paper" on the printer, then it will considered as a Hardware malfunction problem. If it on your computer (Under the printer icon) then it will be a software issue.

However, to check the hardware functionality of the printer, perform the below steps on the printer to print a self test report.

By looking at the pic of the printer, it seems that you are using PSC 2500 printer, so perform the below steps on the printer itself.

On the front panel of the All-in-One, press Setup then press 1 and then press 4.

It will work for both
HP PSC 2400 seriesHP PSC 2500

If you are unable to print a self test report, then try to make a copy from the front panel of the printer, by placing a text document on the scanner glass and then press color copy button.

If the printer prints a test report or makes a copy , then it confirms that the printer is working fine. The issue is with the software part.

If printer fails to print and then error message displayed on the printer LCD screen, then perform the steps given in the blow link.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00786157&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en

The hardware issue may or may not be resolved. Hoewever, if the error message is on your computer, then try to run the print diagnostic utility if the printer is connected to the computer via usb cable and check for the result.

Here is the web link to donwload the print diagnostic utility.

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software10/COL21389/mp-56143-3/IJS_PDU0104_NN_W32_U_WW.exe

Hope this will helps you.

With regards.
Mike.

Printer not printing

check to make sure cables are securly fastened and if it's a laser printer make sure it is set to online mode and not offline mode. Check to make sure not out of toner or ink. Make sure no other print jobs are in the way, Reset the printer. Try a printer self test and make sure the settings on the printer and computer are both set to the same. If none of this works you might have a hardware problem that needs to be fixed. if you have a warranty on the printer call the warranty company as they will fix the problem for you.

Ink

Normally when you install the print software you install HP Director or solution centre software that has a estimated ink staus monitor..from user manual

Check the estimated ink levels You can easily check the ink supply level to determine how soon you might need to replace a print cartridge. The ink supply level shows an estimate of the amount of ink remaining in the print cartridges. Tip You can also print a self-test report to see if your print cartridges might need to be replaced. For more information, see Print a self-test report. To check the ink levels from the HP Director (Windows) 1. In the HP Director (or HP Solution Center), click Settings, point to Print Settings, and then click Printer Toolbox. Note You can also open the Printer Toolbox from the Print Properties dialog box. In the Print Properties dialog box, click the Services tab, and then click Service this device. 2. Click the Estimated Ink Level tab. The estimated ink levels for the print cartridges appear. To check the ink levels from the HP Image Zone software (Mac) 1. In the HP Director (OS 9) or HP Image Zone (OS X), choose Settings, and then choose Maintain Printer. 2. If the Select Printer dialog box appears, select your HP All-in-One, and then click Utilities. 3. From the pop-up menu, choose Ink Level. The estimated ink levels for the print cartridges appear.

Print a self-test report If you are experiencing problems with printing, print a self-test report before you replace the print cartridges. This report provides useful information on several aspects of your device, including your print cartridges.
Load letter, A4, or legal unused plain white paper into the paper tray.

Press and hold the Cancel / Resume button and then press the Start Copy Color button
The HP All-in-One prints a self-test report, which might indicate the source of the printing problem.

Slow Printing

Hi, The slow printing issue can occure even if the cartridges are out or low in ink try to check the print function by the stand alone unit by printing a self test page Here are the steps to print a self test page: On the front panel of the product, press Menu (or Setup) . Press the Right Arrow until Print Reports displays, and then press Enter, Start, or OK . Press the Right Arrow until Self-Test Report displays, and then press Enter, Start, or OK . If the self test page takes less time to print and if all the color blocks and black block print fine the ink level are fine. if the time for self test is also more try to clean the cartridge contacts and replace the cartridges if needed this will fix the issue. If the printer works fine as stand alone self test and copy try to performe the steps in the below webpage: ========== http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00093466&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=2512010&rule=10185&lang=en ========== If the issue is still un fixed try to set the print directly settings in the printer properties Click on start >> control panel >> printer and faxes >> there look for the HP printer icon with the check mark and right click on it and select properties and then click on advance tab and under it select the print directly to printer and click on apply and ok to save the settings. Once done try to print and check with the issue. Hope this will fix the issue. Regards, Barret.
