The timer for the cycle control is most likely defective.

drain machine and check the water level pressure switch air pipe
that's connected to it ,it's posably blocked stopping the switch from operating. safety disconnect from mains electrical supply before removing any covers.

whirlpool has manuals and service books for its machines which have a trouble shooting section, try to get one of these. if you have a sears service center nearby you can usually order these service manuals from them pretty cheap

Check the plastic/rubber motor to gearbox coupling hasn't broken.

Your washer most likely has a broken drive coupling. If broken the washer will fill with water and drain, but the motor spins without driving the transmission (no agitate or spin). raise the main drain hose to the top of the back control head. there may be a problem with the main hose being to low and the water is gravity siphoning out of the washer.make sure the washer is off when you lift the hose up but do not remove it from the wall,you should here water drain out once it has stopped draining restart you machine and it should fill to the proper level and quit then go into your wash cycle

Your drain is to low. Make sure that the drain that your discharge hose is going into is at least as high as the washer. If not the water will drain out as fast as you can fill it.

The lid switch, get something to hold it down to make machine work. Turn machine on and push down on lid.

Water siphoning out the drain line
If the water is continues to fill and water is draining while it is filling or agitating, Check the height of the stand pipe. It should be about 36" above the floor. If the height is correct it may need to have an anti-siphoning valve installed into the drain line.
The washer fills and drains at the same time only on the rinse cycle.
Shut the machine off with timer during this period and raise the drain hose. If the water continues to drain, you will need to install an anti-siphon kit.

More likely: the solenoid which directs the water to either the drain or the spray arm is clogged/jammed. Located underneath near the drain line.
