Usually is the lower knife that gets dull.
Resharpen or replace the lower knife.
when replacing the lower knife, the top of the knife must be flashed with the needle hole plate (teeth plate).
With the top knife at its lower dead center (lower position),
Undo the top knife holding screw, and adjust the knife to overlap the lower knife about 1mm.(inside)
Tight the top knife.
Undo the screw for the side movent for the lower knife, and the spring should push the lower knife against the top knife.
Tight the the screw for the side movement.
Put a piece of thread between the knives and turn the handwheel by hand, in the sewing direction until the top knife is at the lowest position.
If the thread is clearly cut, then the knives are cutting properly.
If the thread is pushed towards you, then one of the knives or both of them need resharpenig or replacement.

Had a pin jammed in upper knife now wont cut. Do I need to replace the knife?

more than likely as the knife blade would have been damaged and blunted

My baby lock BL4-434DF is having trouble serging over even quite thin cross seams. I have changed bottom blade, which didn't make any difference. I am sure it has to do with positioning of bla

  1. Have lower blade even with the needle plate
  2. Have upper blade overlap (like shears) at least 1/32 of an inch or less.
  3. The blades must meet but not overlap too much or fabric will just jam
  4. Move 1 blade at a time.
  5. Run machine Without it being threaded to check progress

What is the tension settings for normal over locking with the Elna 4de

First of all ensure that the serger is threaded correctly.

The two setting which you mention are really a 'range' for an 'average' setting.

Using 'average' fabric such as a medium weight cotton, flannel, etc.; set each of the tensions in the middle of the range and test the stitch. There may be minor adjustment required to get a perfect stitch.

Once you have stitched that first sample, here are some possible minor adjustments required:
1. Tear-drop shaped loops on the underside: Check that the thread is firmly set in the tension dial by giving the needle threads a good snug pull above the tension dials while the presser foot is down.

2. The zig-zag like thread on top should meet the ziz-zag like thread on the underside right on the fabric cut edge. If the meeting happens on top: reduce the upper looper tension slightly and increase the lower looper tension slightly ... test sew and recheck. If the meeting is on the underside: increase the upper looper tension slightly and decrease the lower looper tension slightly ... test sew and recheck.

3. If the meeting does happen along the fabric cut edge but the meeting is hanging beyond the fabric cut edge: increase the blade position (that is, move the blade to the right). If the fabric is creating a ridge or tunnel; move the blade to the left slightly.

Please let me know if this has solved your problem. Otherwise let me know what is happening with the stitch quality.

If my machine is not cutting right do I need to replace both blades

not necesarily, can you see a knick in either of the two blades? use a magnifying glass and see if you can see any damage first.

Then try changing the fixed bottom blade only first, you may have got a replacment top blade in your accessory bag new with the machine.

The blades themselves are very high grade steel just like scissor blade so should last for quite a long time, provided they don't come into contact with a pin.

You can buy the bottom blade for your machine here http://www.sewingpartsonline.com/lower-knife-babylock-60544.aspx along with the top blade and other spares.

Also, remember to clean the blades of lint regularly and give them a wipe with a cloth moistened with a little clear sewing machine oil from time to time.

My blades won't cut, they seem to be rolling rather than cutting

check bottom blade,it should be flush with needle plate. when you turn hand wheel by hand the top knife should be even along the length of the bottom one .the top knige is held by a 7 or 8 mm screw [looking straight at you] slacken this ,turn wheel till knife come to bdc and push the top blade against the bottom one. however if the edges of the knives are shiny or worn ,it will never cut. you can buy them relativly cheaply [eastman staples huddersfield is main juki agent].

How do i adjust the upper cutter on a huskylock 905 serger

There are no specific specs other than "eyeballing" it. Make sure the bottom blad is level with the plate of the machine. The upper cutter should meet and overlap slightly. It is usually a trial and error thing to get it aligned. Good luck.

How do you get the blades to cut on a hobbylock 794 serger

It should just cut. Don't know too much about this machine as I'm new owner, but from what I can gather, either you need a new blade, or the upper knife is disengaged. The metal knob inside the threading area should be turned downwards, engaging the upper knife. The upper knife doesn't usually need replacing unless damaged, apparently. Hope this helps somewhat.

My viking serger 905 wont cut

Sometimes the blades need to be adjusted. Lower them all the way manually to the bottom. The cutters if you look on the side should meet. If they don't' meet or if there is a small space then the upper cutter needs to be lowered.
There are screws that hold this in place. You might need a man to help since the screws on my machine are very tight!
