Compaq presario sr1120nx will not post could this be the motherboard? i pulled out the memory modules and should have received beep codes for missing memory but none. is this the motherboard?
1) Does the power supply's fan spin? 2) Do you have a multimeter? A cheap $10 one from an auto parts store would do fine. 3) Suggestion is to also clean the gold plated contact pins on the ram memory module/s. Use a pencil eraser, and use air to clean the eraser dust off. (Yes I know, but just humor me, and try it)1) Does the power supply's fan spin? 2) Do you have a multimeter? Your laptop, and you have bonded now. It feels comfortable with you; and is serenading you.
NO! You gonna' believe that? lol! Geez.
Beeps you hear are BIOS Beep Codes. The computers method of telling you something is wrong, and an area to look into for it.
I'm willing to bet the laptop is dirty inside. This would be one major problem.
Secondly, you should clean the gold plated contact pins, of the Ram Memory modules ('Stick'); with a pencil eraser. Use air to remove the eraser dust, then reinstall.
Third, the Thermal Paste on the Processor is probably drying up, (or has dried up), and needs to be replaced.
All of the above has specific procedures. Plus an ESD wrist strap should be worn, and it's alligator clip attached to a good ground source. Average cost is around $3 to $6.
I can guide you step by step, if you wish. Post back in a Comment.
The beeps that you are hearing might indicate that your computer has a bad RAM or memory modules already. Reseating the memory modules might resolve the problem. That means you have to remove then place back the RAM. The full instructions in installing memory modules can be viewed from this LINK and should give you an idea how to remove and place them back. If the problem persists, replace RAM/memory module.
I hope this works for you. Kindly comment for further assistance. Thanks for using Fixya!
The above link is provided to give a closeup side view, of a DDR Sdram ram memory module, and it's gold plated contact pins.
Use the pencil eraser to stroke down each contact pin. Both sides. (A DDR Sdram ram memory module has 184 contact pins. 92 on each side)
Refrain from touching the contact pins with your fingers. You can touch the body of the module anywhere you wish, as it is coated with a see-through protective plastic.
If an eraser on the end of a pencil is used, do Not let the metal part of the pencil, rub against the contact pin.
Use air to remove the eraser dust. You can use a can of compressed air for computers, or air from your mouth may be sufficient.
Reinstall the ram memory module/s.
HP Support product specifications, indicate the Compaq Presario S5100NX comes with one - 256MB DDR Sdram ram memory module.
If there has been two ram memory modules installed, suggestion is to reinstall one at a time, to see if there is a bad ram memory module.
Yes, it's kind of a pain.
When installing just one ram memory module, it is installed in Slot 1. The ram memory slot that is closest to the Processor.
Scroll down the above page until you come to the motherboard illustration, and the motherboard photo underneath it.
In the motherboard illustration - DDR DIMM 1 (64/72 bit, 184-pin module) indicates Slot 1.
Install one cleaned ram memory module in Slot 1, plug the computer into power, WAIT 1 minute, turn the computer on.
Works?
Computer shut down normally (Start>Turn Off Computer>Turn Off), unplug from power, observe anti-Static precautions.
Remove that ram memory module, install the other one.
[Anti-Static Precautions:
Your body carries Static electricity. Static WILL fry out (Short Circuit), the hardware components inside a computer.
You may not even see it, or feel it. (Hmmm, I did everything right, but my computer doesn't work)
Computer on a table, unplugged from power, computer case open. TOUCH the metal frame of the open computer case, to relieve your body of Static.
If you get up, and walk away in the middle of working on your computer, upon your return Touch the metal frame again ]
Note the Locating Notch, on the bottom of the ram memory module. It lines up with a Locating Lug, in the bottom of the ram slot on the motherboard.
At a casual glance the Locating Notch may seem to be in the middle. It is Not. Assure that you have the module turned the correct way when reinstalling, so that the Notch lines up with the Lug.
Note the Locks at each end of the ram slot. (White in color) The top of the Lock is eased towards the outside. (Away from the ram slot) Ease both Locks up at the same time.
Note that the bottom corners of the ram module, sit in small slots, of each Lock.
As the ram module is pushed down into place, the Locks are brought up simultaneously.
Note that there is a Notch, on each side of the ram module. The Lock has a protrusion ('Bump') that fits into the Notch, when the ram is fully seated in the ram slot.
Sometimes the 'Bump' does not fit in perfectly into the Notch. It's okay.
If there are two clicks, from the Locks snapping into the Notches, the ram memory module should be fully seated.
Basic video guide, to installing ram memory in a desktop computer,
yes if you have removed both sticks of ram and there is no beep code the n the motherboard is bad if you give me the serial i can give you the part number
Need to know the specific number of beeps to analyze this but all computers need three things to fire. Ram memory, CPU and video. Those are the root of most beep codes. Check your ram memory sticks and make sure they're fully inserted in motherboard. Make sure the video card is inserted properly if it's not an onboard video. If it's not one of these then you probably need to find a professional and it's a pretty good chance the motherboard may be bad.
post comment in my yahoomail so thAT i can kep in touch with [email protected]
when you turn on the computer does the computer beeps?how many times does it beeps? when your computer beeps 3 times faster..try to check you video card!!!! but when the computer continues to beep and beep try to check the modules or the memory try to replace it with a new memory!!! but when you turn on your pc and no beep at all your motherboard will be the problem?so did i answer your questions?
Please verify the capacity and how many memory modules you have in the system?
If your system won't turn on and get 2 beeping sounds. It is an issue with your memory (RAM) you may need to reseat the memory card. After reseating the memory card (RAM) and the issue persist and i suggest to check also the warranty of your system from your coomputer manufacturer for part replacement.
