Question about Symbol WS 5100 6-Port Gigabit Wireless LAN Switch (WS5100R14306WW)
We're having a high volume of xwaits and time outs on our RF guns, handhelds, etc. We can see data leave the RF devices, make it to the Symbol 5100s, through the network infrastructure, to the AS/400 for processing, AS/400 processes the packet, sends back through the CISCO devices, and can the packet return to the Symbol 5100 switch. At this point the RF devices are waiting on a reply from the 5100(s), but the 5100 does not send the packet. This is an intermittent problem. Approx 45 xwaits and timeouts per 8 hour shift with a work force of approx 200 users in the warehouse. Any suggestions?
There can be a variety of issues going on here. There are multiple levels of issues that have to be considered from the Telnet session on the RF to the Telnet server on the AS/400 and everything in between and underneath. Low hanging fruit are:
1. Take a good look at your wireless LAN for co-channel interference etc. and correct channel/power settings
2. Antenna placement (as opposed to AP placement). On an 802.11b/g network, for each diversity-enabled AP, the antenna's should be placed a maximum of 20 inches appart from each other to handle multi-path. The 5100 is a diversity-enabled switch so this could help resolve multi-path problems that are hard to identify.
3. The Telnet app on the RF has a multi-tude of settings that can impact this. Although tedious work, drill down through each one and give them due consideration as to their function and impact.
It's likely that you've already worked through these items but I'd be glad to discuss in more detail with you.
