Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive
I was browsing the troubleshooting site of Western Digital's website and I saw your rating. I'll pose the question to you, since Western Digital's own website doesn't seem to have a clear path to what I'm looking for....
I have had this hard drive for less than a year and it has stopped working as it should. It turns on and my computer sees it but the drive makes some clicking noises for about 30 seconds or so +/- 10 seconds and then it kinda winds down. Does this mean my hard drive is broken in some way and if so is there an easy fix or will I have to get it serviced?

P.S. and I'm not an IT guy, but If I were I would know how to ask for help politely.
Thanks, Larry....ok..the clicking sound, unfortunately, means that your hard drive is going to start a failure mode. usually means that the head is 'nicking' the surface of the drive.
so, data recovery might be your only option at this point, and that's a specialized field.
this is caused, by either shock, vibration, or power spikes, or a combination of them.
Hope that helps you..you might wish to consider this backup, whether you recover from this or note.

Tips for a great answer:

i noticed you ran the chkdsk utility on this drive did you try to repair bad sectors or just files
click start control panel administrative tools computer management disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start two boxes
automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in both boxes then select check now start
you might tick one box then return after its finished the first repair then return and tick the second box you should not do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage this drive
I found that you get best results by ticking one box then returning after it has finished then tick the other box if still no joy
try to use the external hard drive in a different computer and check whether you are able to access the data that is present on the external hard drive or you can try to connect it to a different port and check
