What makes you think your hard drive has failed?
If you think your hard drive has failed you would get a message as your system started up. Something to the effect (can not find a bootable media type). If you have no display on your monitor but you see the lights on your PC lighting up & flashing. More likely you have a video issue. Pay close attention when you start your PC. Listen for a single beep as it starts up. Watch the green light on your monitor, see if it turn to the color amber.
Watch the front of you PC as well. Do you see any led's light up?

You must enter your bios. If your hard drive in not listed in your bios than there are a couple things you need to check.

    1. make sure your data cable is connected correctly.

2 make sure the power cable is connected correcty to the drive

If your bios still does not see your hard drive & the drive is an IDE re-check the jumper settings are correct.

    3. Find the maker's name of the drive. Write down it's serial No#. Go to their web site & download their hard drive utility software. Read the instructions on how to creat a bootable floppy disk so you can test the drive. If any of the test fail & the drive is warranted. Have it replaced. Keep a recoard of the test results to give to the Mfg.

    Hi bezi,

Chances are your hard drive has failed. Your Dell came with a 40GB ATA/100 hard drive. You can use a local store near you to buy a replacement or you can use an on-line store to replace your drive. If you are not that familiar with the interior of your computer I suggest you leave your current hard drive installed until you get a new hard drive.

I'll list a link or two below where you can buy on-line a compatible new hard drive for your Dell.

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/...=

I choose Seagate because they carry a five year waranty. This site does not carry a smaller size other than the 80GB drive.

    http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDet...

This site shows the same drive & size for less.

Once you replace your old drive, just put either your restore CD into your cdrom or your windows CD into the cdrom & install your XP Home edition that came with the Dell.

If you have any more question or need help with anything just post back here & I'll help you out.

    Thanks for using FixYa.

    Have a good day!

Hard disk failure imm

Hello

The hard drive is a mechanical device that WILL fail - it is only a matter of time. Since you are being prompted that yours is about to fail, you need to get a backup of your data as soon as possible.

Use a USB memory stick, USB hard drive, CD or DVD disk or network drive to copy your data from the hard drive immediately. Once your data is copied to a safe location, you can run CHKDSK /r /f from the CMD line to check the hard drive and possibly fix issues.

If the hard drive has "Bad Sectors", you will need to replace the hard drive.

My Amilo Li1818 has the same blank screen

As far as the disc drive goes, regardless of if it is connected to a properly running system or not it will start to read a disc. And BIOS is an internal setup menu stored on the motherboard. If it doesn't bring that up, you might have something fried on your motherboard. I can't see how running your battery dead would have caused this though. If you could, would you list any other symptoms? Does the screen light up at all or do you hear the hard drive try to load? I'm sorry I can't be more direct help with fixing it, but it's information I think you might find useful. Best of luck to you, I hope you can get it fixed the cheapest way possible

Acer M1100 Desktop w/ a different HDD and Optical will not boot

Disconnect the hard drive and dvd from the motherboard
Power on
If you get video and cmos access power off and connect dvd
repeat and connect hard drive
getting video and cmos access has nothing to do with the hard drive...with no hard drive or optical drive you still would have access to cmos
go 1 step at a time to find bottle neck

Computer shuts down on its own hard drive just completly shuts off have to hit power button to restart it. I am thinking that it could be power supply going bad because at times it does have a slight...

Hello mr_nasty_72,
Your problem could be several things. Your hard drive is either over 90 percent full and the windows swap file is dumping the computer to shut down. the hard drive has a bad spot i it and when the system writes to it, then computer shuts down. Your memory has a bad spot in it and when the file useage of the memory gets high enough and finds the badspot, the computer shuts down due to the error. I would run a memory test program on the memory to ake sure it is not a memory error. Also rin a utility like spinrite on the hard drive and see if it can repair any bad sectors it finde and recovers any lost information on the drive. If your computer is new enough you cn go into the bios setup and look at the system utility for the power and fan system on the motherboard. This will tell you if the power supply is putting out the correct power voltage for the system. Regards, rcampsr

Im looking for the jumper settings on a compaq motherboared. its a presario 7478

hello CAVdesert,
I don't think you ever have to change the jumper settings on the motherboard. You may need to change in few cases but otherwise, changing motherboard jumper settings is not recommended.
However, if you need to configure the jumper settings for your Hard Drive, CD/DVD Drive etc, Please refer to the following document.

Jumper Settings for the Installation of Hard Disks and CD, CDRW, and DVD Drives

Hello! my seagate ST30000CB external hard drive (450gb) fell off a table when running and now the disc doesn't spin. Is it possible to fix it, and if so, who can do it for me? george

It would cost as much to fix it, as it would be to replace it (if not more).

The hard drives in theose units are the same as any other 3 1/2" HDD in a computer.
They are sealed units.
Plus dropping it could have possibly damaged the disks in the drive, or the read/write heads.

Will not load.

my old computer had a problem like this, i think the only way to fix a problem like this would be to reformat your hard drive and reinstall your operating system, which would delete everything on your hard drive...if you do not want to lose the files on your hard drive, you can hook up the hard drive to a different computer as a secondary drive and take the files you need off of it...then put the drive back in the original computer and reformat...after that just put back the files back on the original computer with a flash drive or an external hard drive...
cant think of another way to solve this
